Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien expressed his sincere gratitude to the Russian Government and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education for their trust in handing over the “Professor Gagarinsky” to Vietnam. He also described the vessel as a new symbol of Vietnam-Russia cooperation and a common foundation for maritime scientific collaboration.
“The transfer of the vessel will create new opportunities for scientists to conduct continuous research in tropical regions. Aspects such as water composition, biodiversity, ocean currents, and many other aspects beneath the ocean surface will be subject to in-depth investigation”, said Mr. Konstantin Ilyich Mogilevsky.
The Vietnam-Russia Tropical Center also announced that it will coordinate with the Russian side to develop interdisciplinary scientific topics to study Vietnam’s seas and make the most efficient use of the vessel. With the “Professor Gagarinsky” research vessel, Vietnam will significantly enhance its capacity for offshore surveys, expanding the scope of research and exploration of the deep sea.

The “Professor Gagarinsky” is tasked with marine surveys, capable of operating in deep and offshore waters. The vessel’s inception marks a new step forward, enabling scientists from both countries to explore previously unstudied areas. In doing so, they will broaden their understanding of marine ecosystems, biodiversity, and resources, while proposing conservation, restoration, and rational exploitation solutions.
On May 12, the “Professor Gagarinsky” set sail from Vladivostok port and is expected to arrive in Haiphong port on May 25.
The vessel “Professor Gagarinsky” is named after Yuri Gagarin (1934 – 1968), a Soviet hero and the first human in history to journey into space on April 12, 1961, aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft.
The “Professor Gagarinsky” was built in 1987 in Khabarovsk, a city on the Amur River in southeastern Russia. It has a length of 55.76 meters, a width of 9.49 meters, a displacement of 1,157 tons, and a DWT of 329 tons.
