On June 11, local time, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien met with leaders of two leading US corporations, Nike and Walmart, which have large-scale investment and business operations in Vietnam.

At the meeting with Nike, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien appreciated the corporation’s long-term and responsible presence in Vietnam, where approximately 50% of Nike’s global shoe production is manufactured, providing employment for over 450,000 workers. He also shared concerns about the potential impact of current tax policies on Nike’s global supply chain and US consumer interests, and proposed appropriate support orientations for Nike’s operations in Vietnam.
In the afternoon of the same day, during the meeting with Walmart, the world’s largest retail corporation, the Minister discussed the challenges Walmart is facing in its business operations in Vietnam. He affirmed that the Ministry of Industry and Trade will coordinate with the Ministry of Finance and relevant agencies to review and improve policies, ensuring transparency and compliance with international practices.
Emphasizing the role of the American business community in the context of the reciprocal trade agreement negotiations entering a crucial phase, the Minister called on Nike and Walmart to voice their strong support and promote an early, fair, balanced, and sustainable agreement between Vietnam and the US.
Earlier, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien had a meeting with Ms. Jenniffer M. Chan and Ms. Zoe Barinaga, Vice President of Exxon Mobil Corporation.
Representatives of Exxon Mobil affirmed their confidence in Vietnam’s economic development prospects and potential in Southeast Asia, which is why the corporation has implemented numerous projects in Vietnam. They appreciated Vietnam’s recent reforms under the leadership of General Secretary To Lam and believed that the country’s positive changes, along with political stability, are reassuring investors and continuing to attract more investment.
The corporation also pledged to convey positive messages about Vietnam to the White House, the US Trade Representative (USTR), the Department of Commerce, and the Department of Energy to support Vietnam in its negotiations with the US.
Notably, the Minister of Industry and Trade also met with Senator Roger Marshall, representing the state of Kansas and a influential voice in the US political sphere on economic, trade, and agricultural issues.
Senator Roger Marshall commended Vietnam’s seriousness, proactive approach, and goodwill in negotiating with the US. He stated that he would soon convey his opinions to the President and relevant Cabinet members regarding the negotiation process and looked forward to positive outcomes from both sides.
