Long Thanh International Airport’s master plan

Recently, at the conference on socio-economic and defense-security issues held on June 10th, Ms. Truong Thi Huong Binh, Director of Dong Nai Province’s Department of Finance, announced that the Department of Finance and the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) have agreed to submit a joint proposal for the development of a free trade area encompassing areas inside and outside the Long Thanh International Airport to the Prime Minister for approval.

Previously, Dong Nai had initiated a project to establish a complex free trade area to maximize the advantages of Long Thanh International Airport, Phuoc An Port, and the province’s industrial parks. However, in discussions with Dong Nai authorities, ACV revealed their ongoing project to develop a free trade area within the airport premises.

Consequently, the two parties agreed to consolidate their plans, and Dong Nai will present the consolidated proposal for a free trade area encompassing areas inside and outside the Long Thanh International Airport to the Prime Minister.

Strategically located, Dong Nai province serves as the epicenter of the Southern Key Economic Region, playing a pivotal role in the socioeconomic development of the Southeast region and the entire country. With its proximity to Ho Chi Minh City and convenient connections to Binh Duong, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, and Lam Dong, Dong Nai acts as a vital link between industrial hubs and the Central Highlands while also serving as an international gateway.

According to Mr. Dang Minh Duc, Deputy Director of the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment, “The development of a free trade area associated with Long Thanh International Airport and Phuoc An Port is intended to cater to international trade demands, leveraging Dong Nai’s strategic geographical advantages, industry strengths, and development orientation, both provincially and regionally.”

As per Dong Nai’s plans, the free trade area is expected to encompass functional subdivisions for manufacturing, logistics, trade and service-finance, digital economy, information technology, and innovation.

The proposed free trade area in Dong Nai province is slated for multiple strategic locations, spanning approximately 8,000 hectares. It will include the Logistics Park adjacent to Long Thanh International Airport, the Information Technology Park, the Innovation Park in Long Thanh district (over 1,400 hectares), the Bau Can – Tan Hiep Industrial Park (over 2,600 hectares), the Xuan Que – Song Nhạn Industrial Park (nearly 3,600 hectares), and the Phuoc An Port and Logistics Area (over 360 hectares).

This project is divided into three phases. The first phase, expected to be operational by 2026, involves an investment of $5.45 billion and a capacity of 25 million passengers per year. The second phase, from 2028 to 2032, will increase the capacity to 50 million passengers annually.

The third phase, commencing after 2035, will further expand the airport’s capacity to 100 million passengers per year, establishing Long Thanh International Airport as Vietnam’s largest airport.
