Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan affirmed that while there is an issue of counterfeit drugs in the market, they are not present in hospitals.

The Minister emphasized that counterfeit drugs and food products are a pressing global concern. Citing statistics from the United States as an example, she revealed that globally, approximately $600 billion is impacted by counterfeit drugs and dietary supplements annually.

Domestically, Vietnam has been proactive in addressing this issue over the past period, according to the Minister, through a comprehensive review of the legal framework.

Currently, under Article 194 of the Penal Code, the production of counterfeit drugs carries a maximum penalty of death.

This reflects the resolute stance of the Vietnamese government and relevant ministries against counterfeit drugs and food products.

However, recent events have exposed areas that require further scrutiny and rectification, including refining the legal framework and ensuring the dedication and integrity of the implementing officials.

The Ministry of Health has also advised the Prime Minister on the issuance of numerous directives and is currently submitting legal documents and decrees to enhance the legal corridors related to this issue.

“Drugs and food directly impact people’s health, so we must be resolute and take the most stringent measures. Counterfeit drugs exist in the market, but not in hospitals,” asserted the Minister.

The Ministry of Health is collaborating with the National Steering Committee 389, under the Ministry of Finance, along with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism on matters pertaining to advertising. Simultaneously, the Ministry is working with the Ministry of Public Security to combat counterfeit drugs, food products, and cosmetics.

Specifically, with the Ministry of Public Security, three regulations have been signed to address related issues, including the prevention of counterfeit drugs and food products.

Most recently, three cases involving counterfeit drugs in Thanh Hoa, Kera candy by Hang Du Muc, and counterfeit cosmetics in Dong Nai were uncovered through the efforts of the Ministry of Health, which then coordinated with the Ministry of Public Security to investigate and clarify the incidents.

During the meeting, the Minister also expressed concern about the legal framework for protecting medical staff, which remains a challenging issue. Despite the Law on Examination and Treatment prohibiting any form of harm to medical staff and infrastructure, the Minister proposed stricter penalties to deter such incidents and protect medical professionals in all circumstances.
