In June, the Hanoi People’s Committee Office issued a notice of conclusions and directions from Mr. Tran Sy Thanh, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee, regarding the construction of the Ngọc Hồi Bridge and its approach roads.
Accordingly, the Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee assigned the Hanoi Transport Project Management Board to immediately proceed with the pre-qualification of domestic and foreign EPC contractors; and instructed relevant units and departments to urgently complete the necessary procedures, ensuring that the construction of the Ngọc Hồi Bridge commences on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19).
Earlier, in mid-April, the Hanoi People’s Committee approved the competition results for the architectural design of the Ngọc Hồi Bridge. The design titled “Gateway to the Sun,” created by the Joint Stock Company for Bridge and Tunnel Design and Consultancy, won first place.
According to the representative of the first-prize winner, the Ngọc Hồi Bridge is the only bridge crossing the Red River in Hanoi that is oriented almost exactly along the east-west axis.

The Ngọc Hồi Bridge is the only bridge crossing the Red River in Hanoi that is oriented almost exactly along the east-west axis.
Thanks to this unique orientation, throughout the apparent path of the sun at the bridge’s location, travelers will be able to observe the sunrise and sunset on all days of the year. Notably, on certain occasions, the sun will rise and set in perfect alignment with the bridge’s axis.
Capitalizing on this feature, the architectural design of the Ngọc Hồi Bridge is developed based on the concept of a “Gateway to the Sun,” transforming the bridge into a place that welcomes and bids farewell to the sun each day.
The symbol of two “H” letters is prominently featured in the bridge’s architectural language, deeply conveying the notion of harmony, concord, and cooperation between Hanoi and Hung Yen, the two localities directly connected by the bridge.
Other details, such as the bridge’s street lighting system, are also specially designed. The streetlight poles are inclined along the suspended cable line, and the streetlights and cables together create an image of sun rays radiating from the sun. The bridge’s railings are designed with sun motifs, establishing a consistent connection throughout the architectural ensemble.
