According to NLD, the Chairman of the People’s Committee of Ca Mau province has recently issued a document requesting relevant units and localities to coordinate with the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) in implementing the project to expand and upgrade the Ca Mau Airport.

The Ca Mau Airport is expected to temporarily cease operations for 12 months, from November 2025 to October 2026, to facilitate the expansion and upgrade works.

The closure of the airport is necessary to carry out Package 12 of the airport upgrade project, which is invested by ACV. This package includes the construction and installation of equipment for the runway, taxiway, aircraft parking apron, and auxiliary works. The project is scheduled to commence on August 19, 2025, at the Ca Mau Airport, with an expected completion and operation date of October 2026 (a 14-month construction period).

ACV will direct the contractor to expedite the progress and shorten the construction time to resume the operation of Ca Mau airport as soon as possible and minimize negative impacts on the local economy and society.

In reality, the expansion and upgrade project of Ca Mau Airport has been approved in principle by the Prime Minister since October 2024. The project aims to extend the runway, add aircraft parking aprons, and expand the terminal to accommodate A320/321 aircraft and their equivalents. The total investment capital for the upgrade of Ca Mau Airport is estimated at VND 2,400 billion.

To date, the site clearance phase has been completed, affecting more than 600 households and organizations in Tan Thanh ward, Ca Mau city, with a total area of nearly 106 hectares. The total cost of compensation for site clearance for the project is over VND 577 billion.

According to the plan, Ca Mau Airport will meet the 4C standard by 2030, allowing it to operate medium-range aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and A321, with a capacity of one million passengers per year. By 2050, the airport is expected to serve three million passengers annually.

Ca Mau Airport was built during the French colonial period. Currently, the airport has a 1,500-meter-long and 30-meter-wide runway, capable of accommodating small aircraft such as the ATR72 (maximum 90 passengers) and the Embraer E190 (124 passengers). The airport terminal has a capacity of 200,000 passengers per year.

Ca Mau Airport currently operates one daily flight on the Ca Mau – Ho Chi Minh City route using ATR72 aircraft. Additionally, there was a Hanoi – Ca Mau route operated by Bamboo Airways using Embraer aircraft since mid-2023, but it was temporarily discontinued after a short period.
