According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MARD), as of the beginning of the year, there have been over 970 African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreaks in more than 710 communes (over 21% of the total communes) across 33 out of 34 merged provinces and cities. More than 100,000 pigs have died or been culled.
The outbreak has caused significant losses to the livestock industry, with hotspots in provinces such as Cao Bang, Tuyen Quang, Quang Tri, Phu Tho, and Quang Ngai. The average pig price in the country, influenced by the disease, has increased from VND 60,000/kg to VND 65,000/kg, and this upward trend is expected to continue in the coming months. This is seen as an opportunity for modern livestock companies to maintain their large herds.
According to BAF, the company is currently one of the leading pig farming enterprises in Vietnam in terms of herd size. BAF is continuously investing in technology, infrastructure, and especially genetics to improve quality and expand its pig herd.
Importing a large number of breeding pigs from France for long-term goals
Recently, to ensure the quality of its input for the farming ecosystem, BAF imported nearly 1,000 great-grandparent pigs (GGP) from reputable breeding organizations in France, including the famous purebred lines of Large White and Landrace.
These lines are specialized grandparent pigs with superior reproductive characteristics compared to the common lines used in Vietnam. Technically, the imported herd achieves an average productivity of 31-34 weaned piglets/sow/year. Piglets are weaned at 25 days old, weighing over 7kg on average, with good growth, optimal for commercial farming.
Additionally, another remarkable feature is the average of 16.5 functional teats, the highest in the world. This helps to achieve a high level of uniformity in the number of piglets born, enhancing their health and improving the reproductive performance of the herd.
Not only are they strong in reproduction, but the purebred GGP lines also impress with their growth rate. Specifically, pigs reach 100 kg at 142 days old, with an average daily gain (ADG) of 900g/day in the 30-115 kg phase and a feed conversion ratio (FCR) of only 2.3 kg per kg of gain – ideal for large-scale industrial farming.
In the first quarter of 2025, BAF put into operation high-quality breeding farms in the Central Highlands region, with Minh Phu farm as the core, housing 2,500 great-grandparent pigs and 2,500 grandparent pigs, bringing BAF’s total great-grandparent herd to 3,750 sows. This move is a crucial step in the strategy to develop 450,000 sows by 2030. According to BAF, this will be the center for nurturing and purifying the imported great-grandparent herd, forming the basis for pig supply in the coming years. Additionally, to achieve the goal of 10 million commercial pigs by 2030.
The import and development of the pig herd at Minh Phu farm not only serve the plan to expand the herd but also play a crucial technical role in Vietnam’s livestock industry. Furthermore, the company commenced the Thanh Dat Gia Lai farm project, a high-tech pig farming project with a capacity of 5,000 sows and 150,000 commercial pigs, expected to generate revenue of VND 850-950 billion per year.
BAF believes that investing in high-quality breeding stock is a strategic move to ensure productivity, product quality, and competitiveness in the domestic market and will also target export markets.
