The durian market in Ho Chi Minh City has been bustling with various price ranges lately. According to reports from Nguoi Lao Dong journalists, from small stalls to durian wholesalers, there has been a surprising abundance of affordable durians, with quality that rivals the more expensive options priced at hundreds of thousands of dong per kilo.
Inexpensive Durian: “Substandard” or Naturally Ripened Fruit?
Mr. Tuan, owner of Tuan Map Vuya with over 20 years of experience in the durian business, considers the 35,000 VND/kilo durians as “substandard.” He explains that these fruits have thicker skins, fewer segments, and less sweet flesh.

Mr. Tuan sells these “substandard” durians for 40,000 VND, while his premium durians are priced at 90,000 VND/kilo. He emphasizes that the higher price reflects the superior quality, and that “you get what you pay for.”

Mr. Tuan sells flat-seeded durians for 40,000 VND/kilo.
The truth about 35,000 VND/kilo durians in Ho Chi Minh City
On the other hand, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Tuyen, a street vendor selling naturally ripened durians on 3/2 Street, assures that her affordable durians are of good quality. Her durians are sourced directly from Dak Lak and are naturally ripened, without any chemical treatment. She offers small, naturally fallen durians for 35,000 VND/kilo.

“This is the season for naturally fallen durians in Vietnam, which only lasts for about a month. I get my supply directly from Dak Lak. These durians are not treated with any chemicals and are naturally ripened,” Ms. Tuyen explains.

Despite the low price, Ms. Tuyen guarantees the quality of her durians, promising to refund customers if the fruits are not ripe or sweet enough. With daily sales of 400-600 kg, it’s evident that affordable durians remain a popular choice among consumers.
Reasons for the Unstable Durian Market
This year’s durian season has been less vibrant than previous years. One reason is the higher proportion of “substandard” fruits on the trees, leading to an increase in street vendors selling durians at fluctuating prices. This situation creates challenges for reputable durian businesses.
The current durian market showcases a stark contrast in quality and pricing. While 35,000 VND/kilo durians may be of lower quality or “substandard,” they can also be naturally ripened, delicious, and affordable. Finding high-quality, inexpensive durians relies on the discernment of consumers and the trustworthiness of the seller.
