Earlier, Mr. Duong Van Tam’s family (from Lien Vinh neighborhood, Hai Binh ward) was startled to find their July electricity bill amounting to nearly VND 10 million.

According to Mr. Tam, in July, the family only used lighting, fans, a refrigerator, and a rice cooker, with no air conditioning or high-energy-consuming appliances.

“For the first six months of the year, our electricity bills ranged from VND 440,000 to over VND 1.2 million per month. However, in July, it suddenly surged to nearly VND 10 million, more than eight times the average of previous months, despite no changes in our household activities,” Mr. Tam said.

Faced with this abnormal spike, the family requested an inspection from the electricity sector. The investigation revealed that the electricity meter was functioning correctly. However, upon further examination, the Nghi Son Power Company discovered that the electrical wire after Mr. Tam’s meter had insulation damage due to a shared telephone line causing a short circuit.

After negotiations with the involved parties, on August 4, a telecom company took responsibility and pledged to cover the entire electricity bill for July.

The representative of the Nghi Son Power Management Team stated that this was an unusual incident, caused by improperly installed telephone cables that did not meet technical standards, combined with adverse weather conditions, resulting in friction and electrical leakage.
