On August 9th, the People’s Committee of Quang Ngai Province announced that Ms. Y Ngoc, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee, had signed a decision approving the investment project for the construction of the new Tra Khuc 1 Bridge.

The Tra Khuc 1 Bridge will be constructed in Nghia Lo and Truong Quang Trong wards, with a total investment of VND 2,199 billion from the provincial budget. The project is categorized as a Group B project, and the investor is the Project Management Unit for Traffic Construction Works of Quang Ngai Province. The construction is expected to take place from 2025 to 2027.

The existing Tra Khuc 1 Bridge is in a serious state of disrepair.

The project includes the construction of an extra-large class bridge, designed with steel, reinforced concrete, and pre-stressed concrete. The bridge will be over 577 meters long, with a width of 28 meters and a design load of HL 93.

The approach roads to the bridge will be designed as primary urban roads with a speed limit of 60 km/h. The northern approach road will be 28 meters wide, connecting to the starting intersection, while the southern approach road will vary in width from 28 to 44 meters, connecting to the ending intersection.

Many of the bridge’s pillars are in poor condition, with exposed steel and rust.

The starting and ending intersections will be organized with roundabouts and controlled by road markings and signs as per regulations. The intersection with Ton Duc Thang Street will be a grade-separated intersection, with a tunnel on Ton Duc Thang Street. Traffic on this street will be controlled by road markings and signs as well.

The Ton Duc Thang tunnel will have a width of 11.5 meters (including 0.5-meter thick walls on each side) and a clearance height of 3.5 meters. The structure will be made of reinforced concrete.

Upon completion, the existing Tra Khuc 1 Bridge will be dismantled, bringing its over 60-year-old mission to an end. The current Tra Khuc 1 Bridge is also in a state of serious disrepair, with many pillars exposing steel and shedding concrete. In recent times, the authorities have had to ban large vehicles from using the bridge and close it during floods when the water level exceeds the third alert level.

Perspective drawing of the upcoming Tra Khuc 1 Bridge project.

According to the People’s Committee of Quang Ngai Province, the Tra Khuc 1 Bridge project aims to gradually complete the synchronous transport network in the province, in line with the approved planning. It will also improve transport capacity and connectivity to the northern gateway of the provincial capital of Quang Ngai, across the Tra Khuc River.

Additionally, the project is expected to create an architectural landmark, a symbol for the province, and contribute to the development of an urban area along the river, transforming the face and scale of the provincial capital in the future.

It is understood that the design of the structure was selected through a national architectural design competition, attracting many architects, and the chosen design takes inspiration from the image of a water wheel.
