Crackdown on Counterfeit Electric Motorcycles in Hanoi
In a recent raid, authorities inspected three stores in Hanoi and discovered dozens of counterfeit electric motorcycles bearing the Nijia label and other well-known brands. A representative from Nijia Vietnam confirmed that these vehicles were not manufactured or distributed by their company.
Forging Invoices and Inspection Documents
The police investigation revealed that, over several months, a criminal group had collected data on genuine vehicles and proceeded to assemble over 100 counterfeit motorcycles, worth more than VND 1 billion. These vehicles were legitimized with fake paperwork, including invoices, inspection certificates, and certificates of origin, before being sold to various shops in Hanoi. The counterfeit motorcycles looked almost identical to the authentic ones and were sold for approximately VND 4 million less per bike.
Previously, market management forces had conducted inspections in several provinces and cities, checking hundreds of stores and uncovering a large number of unregistered electric motorcycles. Many of these vehicles were imported from China, bypassing inspections and failing to meet technical standards. They were advertised rampant on social media and e-commerce platforms for just VND 6-10 million, appealing to customers’ desire for cheap products.
In reality, most of these products lack quality certificates, warranties, and their components, such as batteries, chargers, and motors, are often substandard, prone to malfunction, and pose risks of fire, loss of brakes, or electrical short circuits.

Low-quality, unregistered electric motorcycles are starting to flood the market
Mr. Hoang Anh Tu, a motorcycle dealer in Ho Chi Minh City, attributed the proliferation of unregistered vehicles to lax regulations regarding low-speed electric motorcycles, which are not required to be registered. Many of these vehicles exploit loopholes by being classified as electric bicycles or substandard motorcycles, but in reality, they can reach speeds of 50-60 km/h, posing a high risk of accidents.
The Dangers of Counterfeit and Low-Quality Electric Motorcycles
According to the authorities, this situation is complex and has been a contributing factor to several electric motorcycle fires in the past.
Numerous fires involving electric motorcycles have been traced to recycled or lead-acid batteries, substandard chargers and wires, and the absence of overheating and overloading protection. It is especially hazardous when individuals charge their vehicles indoors, in apartments or residential areas. Additionally, batteries quickly degrade, control modules malfunction, and brakes are inefficient, making operation risky.
Mr. Hoang Manh Tan, Deputy General Director of the Son Ha Group, expressed frustration over the impact of unregistered vehicles on domestic brands. He mentioned that even some Son Ha stores had their reputations affected by the mixing of unregistered vehicles with their legitimate products. The restriction on gasoline-powered motorcycles in major cities has inadvertently provided an opportunity for unregistered vehicles to reach consumers more easily.
Unscrupulous businesses dealing in unregistered electric motorcycles go as far as attaching pedals to their vehicles to classify them as electric bicycles and avoid registration requirements. Some motorcycles are even designed with two power sources and two different plugs: one enabling a maximum speed of 45 km/h and the other limiting it to 25 km/h. During inspections, they simply switch the plugs to make the vehicles appear compliant and avoid penalties.
