On August 10th, Sun Phu Quoc Airways (SPA) – a carrier backed by Sun Group – welcomed its first Airbus A321NX at Phu Quoc International Airport.

The A321NX is the first of eight aircraft to be delivered and deployed in 2025. The plane is a brand new Airbus A321, manufactured and delivered directly from the Airbus factory in Hamburg, Germany.

The A321NX features a significantly improved cabin with a spacious feel, thanks to its higher cabin ceiling and larger windows. The air circulation system is equipped with HEPA filters, eliminating up to 99.9% of fine dust and bacteria.

Notably, the aircraft is powered by LEAP-1A engines, which offer 20% fuel savings, 50% reduction in COâ‚‚ emissions, and 75% less noise compared to previous generations.

On the same day, a strategic financing agreement was signed between Sun Phu Quoc Airways and Vietcombank. Vietcombank will be the lead arranger for a credit package to fund Sun Phu Quoc Airways’ acquisition of 10 new Airbus A320/321 NEO aircraft.

Sun Phu Quoc Airways is expected to commence ticket sales in October 2025 and operate its first commercial flight in November.

Sun Phu Quoc Airways (SPA) received its air transport business license in June 2025. The approved plan includes a projected fleet size of 31 aircraft by 2030. The total investment for the project is VND 2,500 billion (approximately USD 98.81 million).

The project aims to establish a new carrier with a primary business model of commercial passenger transport, complemented by charter operations serving tourists traveling to and from popular Vietnamese and international tourist destinations, such as renowned island resorts and bustling financial hubs.

According to the investor, the airline will develop its network with Phu Quoc as its central hub, connecting the “Pearl Island” to major domestic and international cities. This includes establishing direct routes to previously unserved markets in Asia, such as Japan, South Korea, and China. In the domestic market, Sun Phu Quoc Airways aims to enhance connectivity between Phu Quoc and various provinces, not just focusing on Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, thereby improving accessibility to the island for residents from other localities.
