Why Have Delays and Cancellations Increased at Tan Son Nhat and Noi Bai Airports?

Following a series of articles published by Báo Người Lao Động highlighting the need for improved airport services, particularly in terms of on-time performance and reducing delays and cancellations, ACV – the corporation managing and operating 22 airports nationwide – has responded. They attributed the recent issues to the ongoing development and expansion projects at these airports, which are aimed at enhancing capacity and improving services.

ACV mentioned the inauguration of Terminal 3 at Tan Son Nhat International Airport as a testament to their commitment to enhancing aviation infrastructure and services. Similarly, the expansion of Terminal 2 at Noi Bai International Airport is underway and expected to be completed by the end of 2025, significantly alleviating congestion and enhancing passenger services.

Additionally, ACV is undertaking multiple infrastructure development projects across the country, including expansions at Vinh International Airport, Ca Mau Airport, and the construction of Terminal 2 at Dong Hoi Airport, to meet the growing demands of the aviation industry.

To address on-time performance, ACV has implemented technological solutions for flight management. Both Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat International Airports have adopted the A-CDM model for efficient runway and apron management, reducing ground delays and improving flight punctuality.

Furthermore, ACV has introduced self-service options for passengers with kiosk check-in and online check-in platforms like ACV iCute. Passengers can now independently complete check-in procedures and baggage drop-off, expediting the process through E-gate access to the boarding gates.

The introduction of the VNeID application has further streamlined the process, enhancing security and convenience for passengers. The Autogate system and Self Check-in Kiosk/Self Baggage Drop facilities have also been widely deployed, empowering passengers and saving time. ACV coordinates with airlines to optimize flight schedules and strictly adhere to slot allocations approved by the Vietnam Aviation Authority.

It’s Not Just About Delays and Cancellations

Báo Người Lao Động previously reported on AirHelp’s global airport rankings for 2025, where Noi Bai Airport ranked 242nd and Tan Son Nhat Airport ranked 248th out of 250 airports. These rankings considered on-time performance, customer satisfaction, food quality, and retail options.

To enhance the overall airport experience, it is essential to address issues beyond just delays and cancellations. Long waits for baggage claim, extended times on the tarmac, and high food prices are among the concerns raised by passengers.

According to preliminary data from the Vietnam Aviation Authority, the on-time performance for the first half of 2025 averaged 62.6%, a decrease of 13.1 percentage points compared to the same period last year. Domestic airlines canceled 844 flights, equivalent to a cancellation rate of 0.6%, an increase of 0.2 percentage points from the previous year.

The Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Authority emphasized that the quality of services at international airports like Tan Son Nhat and Noi Bai is not just an aviation industry concern but a crucial component of the overall tourist experience. A negative airport experience can impact a visitor’s impression of the city and country, affecting tourism retention and attraction.
