The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Council has officially approved the investment policy for the Van Thanh Canal dredging, environmental improvement, and infrastructure development project during its 23rd meeting. The project aims to transform the canal and its surroundings, enhancing the lives of residents in the area.

Component 1 of the project focuses on dredging, environmental improvement, and infrastructure development of the Van Thanh Canal in Thanh My Tay Ward, with an estimated investment of VND 1,743 billion.

Component 2 involves compensation, support, resettlement, and site clearance with a total estimated investment of VND 6,812 billion.

In terms of infrastructure, the project will improve a total of 1,965 meters of the main canal and a 275-meter branch. The road along the canal will have a width of 6-20 meters. A new Phu An Bridge will be constructed, and Ngo Tat To Street, from An Phu Bridge to Phu My Street, will be widened to 25 meters.

The canal has been facing severe pollution due to domestic waste. Garbage bags and other waste are often thrown directly into the canal, causing an unsanitary environment.

Plastic bags, packaging, and other litter are commonly seen in the canal, further contributing to the pollution.

A total area of 74,713 square meters will be cleared for the project, affecting 1,065 cases. It is estimated that 772 households living along the canal will be relocated, and 293 households will be partially cleared.

While some long-term residents live along the canal, most of the alleyways are home to workers and renters.

Over the years, the canal has suffered from encroachment, siltation, and severe pollution, impacting the lives of the residents.

The improvement of the Van Thanh Canal is expected to address pollution issues, enhance water drainage, improve the environment, and ultimately, raise the quality of life for the local community.
