The Cua Nhuong Fishery Port in Ha Tinh province, one of the most modern in Central Vietnam, boasts an impressive array of facilities and infrastructure.

Spanning over 5 hectares, the project commenced in January 2024 with a total investment of VND 280 billion, sourced from compensation funds for environmental incidents caused by Hung Nghiep Formosa Ha Tinh Steel Company.

After more than a year of construction, the project is nearing completion. However, local fishermen report that the channel leading to the port has silted up, making navigation challenging for vessels.

Designed as a Type II fishery port, Cua Nhuong will accommodate vessels with a capacity of 400CV, handling up to 100 vessels per day and an annual throughput of 16,000 tons of seafood.

The project included dredging the channel leading to the port and the waters in front of it, reaching a length of approximately 400 meters.

However, siltation has narrowed the channel in several locations, with some sections only measuring 4-5 meters wide during low tide, hindering vessel navigation.

Fisherman Nguyen Tien Huy from Thien Cam commune shared that the insufficient dredging has resulted in sandbars blocking the entrance and exit of the port, making it difficult for vessels measuring 12-15 meters to access the facility.

“Due to the shallow channel, vessels often have to anchor nearly a nautical mile away from the port and transfer their catch to small boats to reach the shore, adding complexity to their work,” said Huy.

Huy further emphasized that having a modern port is pointless if vessels cannot access it. He urged the authorities to devise a plan to dredge the channel soon, ensuring the port’s functionality and benefiting the local fishing community.

Mr. Bui Tuan Son, Director of the Management Board of Ha Tinh Fishery Ports and Storm Shelters, acknowledged the concerns raised by fishermen, local authorities, and the Cam Nhuong Fishery Association regarding the silted channel, which hinders vessel navigation during low tide.

According to Mr. Son, the contractor had dredged a 392-meter-long channel connecting the port to the Rao Cai – Gia Hoi inland waterway during the project’s implementation.

Additionally, they had dredged an area of 3.8 hectares in front of the port to ensure sufficient depth for the largest vessels to navigate, berth, and unload their cargo.

“The challenge we face now is that the silted section of the channel falls under the jurisdiction of the National Inland Waterway of Rao Cai – Gia Hoi, managed by the Directorate of Inland Waterways, which is part of the Ministry of Construction,” explained Mr. Son. “According to regulations, any proposal or initiative to dredge this section must come from the Directorate.”

Mr. Son also mentioned a draft proposal to transfer the management of the National Inland Waterway to the provincial level.

Moving forward, the Management Board plans to request the Directorate of Inland Waterways to dredge the National Inland Waterway of Rao Cai – Gia Hoi, ensuring smooth navigation for vessels accessing the Cua Nhuong Fishery Port.
