Penang’s Durian Push: Elevating Local Varieties for Global Recognition

Penang state in Malaysia is embarking on an ambitious journey to register more local durian varieties, aiming to expand its recognized catalog and enhance the global appeal of its durian brand.

At the launch event of the Durian Outreach Program at Rain Tree Farm (Taman Permatang Tinggi Indah), Chow Kon Yeow, the state’s leader, emphasized that many of Penang’s kampung durian varieties rival the taste of premium hybrids like Musang King and Black Thorn. He encouraged farmers and cooperatives to boldly register their unique durian types, especially those found in traditional villages, for official recognition.

With over 200 registered durian varieties already, including the recent additions of two hybrids, Tupai King (D214) and Cenderawasih, Penang is home to some renowned durian stars. Black Thorn (Or Chi), Tokun Top (D220), Musang King, and Ang Heh (Tôm đỏ) are among the famous names. In 2024, the state exported over 67 tons of durian, mainly Musang King and Black Thorn, to its primary markets, China and Singapore.

Looking beyond traditional markets, Penang is setting its sights on new destinations like India, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East. According to Chow, this strategy will boost export value and provide stable income for farmers while enticing the youth to engage in agrotech and agritourism.

Additionally, the state is developing the Penang Durian Valley@Relay project, a durian research and development center equipped with research facilities, orchards, and smart farming technology applications. Slated for completion in Q1 2027, it will become an integral part of the state’s agritourism ecosystem.

The Durian Outreach Program also encompasses experiential activities such as farmer interactions, culinary demonstrations, pet zones, and family-friendly events, all designed to promote Penang’s durian culture to local and international visitors.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) is preparing to introduce three new durian hybrids. As shared by its Director-General, Dr. , these varieties are being assessed for adaptability in different regions, including two development centers in Kuala Kangsar (Perak) and Jerangau (Terengganu). The official launch will unveil their names and codes.

In parallel, the Johor state government has collaborated with the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) to establish the Durian Collection, Processing, Packaging, and Marketing Center (CPPDC) in Tangkak. This center aims to stabilize durian prices and ensure a sustainable supply chain for domestic and export markets.
