On August 13, Ho Chi Minh City commenced the construction of a project to revamp the northern bank of Kênh Đôi (old District 8) stretching over 4.3 km through Chánh Hưng and Phú Định wards. With a total investment of more than VND 7,300 billion, the project is expected to be completed by 2028, giving a new look to the area along the canal.
Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, Bui Xuan Cuong, requested that the units ensure the project’s progress and quality while minimizing the impact on the lives of residents and the environment.
The project encompasses several major components, including the construction of a 4.3-km-long embankment, dredging a portion of the northern canal, and upgrading two roads, Hoài Thanh and Nguyễn Duy, to a width of 20 meters. In parallel, the city will open a new Nguyễn Duy route connecting from alley 157 Hưng Phú to Chữ Y Bridge, build Hiệp Ân 2 Bridge, and develop a system of drainage, lighting, greenery, and inland waterways for tourism purposes.
The construction will affect approximately 1,605 households and organizations, with a land retrieval area of over 5.85 hectares. So far, nearly 1,300 cases have agreed to the compensation plan, including around 400 households that have handed over the site; the remaining cases are being expedited by local authorities for land clearance and handover to the contractor.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Infrastructure Investment and Construction Management Board, this project is part of a plan to relocate dilapidated houses along canals and rivers, aiming to improve the lives of residents, create a “bến dưới thuyền” (wharf and boat) landscape, enhance transportation connectivity, and boost tourism.
Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, Bui Xuan Cuong, stated that Kênh Đôi is a significant waterway with historical and cultural value but has suffered from pollution and deteriorating infrastructure over the years. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the project’s progress and quality while minimizing its impact on the environment and the lives of residents.
