The 10th meeting of the Joint Committee for Negotiating the Review and Upgrade of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) was held in New Delhi, India, from August 10-14.
This was a follow-up to the joint efforts of India and the member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to finalize the review and update of the Agreement, which has been in effect since 2010, to better align with current global trade practices.
The 10th session took place amid significant progress made in the previous rounds of negotiations.
So far, nine meetings of the AITIGA Joint Committee have been held, including meetings of eight specialized sub-committees, discussing critical areas such as market access, rules of origin, customs procedures, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, and economic and technical cooperation.
The AITIGA review process is being carried out constructively, aiming to facilitate easier, more efficient, and beneficial trade for businesses.
The negotiators from India and ASEAN have demonstrated a strong commitment by regularly organizing negotiation rounds and pushing for the completion of the review before 2025 as planned.
The amendment and finalization of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) in 2025 are expected to boost bilateral trade and address current challenges, including high compliance costs, low utilization of preferences from the agreement, and trade imbalances between the two sides.
