According to the Laotian Times, Elavan Ladpakdee, representing the Lao Durian Business Group, a Lao durian producer, shared their plans to supply approximately 400 tons of high-quality durian to domestic and international markets by 2026. Currently, Laos has a total durian cultivation area of 269 hectares, with 18,957 trees planted, of which 3,312 are in the fruiting stage and 15,645 are still in the growth phase.

To achieve this goal, specialized training focuses on enhancing cultivation techniques, optimizing orchard management, strengthening pest control, and developing value-added processed products. These collective efforts aim to comprehensively enhance the market value of durian.

The training program also elaborated on the standards and regulations pertaining to Lao agricultural exports, along with the necessary documentation and declaration procedures for fresh durian exports. Mr. Elavan emphasized that Laos is committed to enhancing its entire supply chain, from seedling cultivation to product transportation, to ensure the durian’s quality meets international premium market standards.

Mr. Bounchan Kombounyasith, Director-General of the Department of Agriculture (Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Laos), affirmed the government’s dedication to promoting agricultural production in alignment with national socio-economic development. He underscored their focus on ensuring food security and the commercialization of agricultural products.

The Chinese market is considered a key export destination. To realize this objective, Laos intends to leverage its geographical proximity to China and improve logistics efficiency through the China-Laos railway, expected to reduce transportation costs by 35%. Moreover, Controlled Atmosphere (CA) technology will be employed to maintain the fruit’s sugar content above 32°C, enabling swift delivery within 72 hours.

Dubbed the “King of Fruits” in Southeast Asia, durian is renowned for its potent aroma and exquisite flavor. By harnessing fertile land, advanced cultivation techniques, and growing market demand, Laos is actively enhancing its industry capabilities and vying to compete with traditional durian exporters such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Industry experts predict that if Laos sustains its current annual average growth rate of 25% in cultivation area, it is poised to become a significant global durian supplier by 2030.

Not only Laos but also Cambodia is actively promoting durian exports to China. According to Khmer Times, Cambodia exported two tons of fresh durian to Henan Province in China by air for the first time on August 8. The flight from Cambodia to Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport in Henan Province takes only four hours, meaning that durian can be transported from farm to consumer within 48 hours.
