The living room and kitchen are two of the most important spaces in a home when it comes to feng shui. The living room is where family bonds and social connections are forged, while the kitchen is the heart of the home, where energy and wealth accumulate.

To enhance the energy and prosperity of your home, remember these “4 Do’s and 3 Don’ts” of feng shui.

4 Do’s in the Living Room

Do 1: Arrange the Sofa Wisely

The sofa is the focal point of the living room and holds significant feng shui importance. It represents the Water element, symbolizing wealth and finances. Here’s how to arrange your sofa to attract prosperity and positive energy:

– Position the sofa against a solid wall to create a sense of stability and support. If that’s not possible, consider placing a cabinet, room divider, or screen behind it to create a sense of backing. Avoid placing the sofa with its back to the door or hallway, and refrain from placing it in front of a mirror, as this can cause unease and a sense of being watched.

– Place the sofa in alignment with the auspicious direction of your home. For example, if your front door faces west, place the sofa in the east, southeast, south, or northwest direction. Avoid positioning the sofa directly under a beam or facing the stairs or front door, as this can create pressure and negative energy. You can mitigate this by placing plants or decorative items such as coins.

– Opt for a matching sofa set with pairs or couples in mind. In feng shui, even numbers symbolize harmony and unity. Whether you choose an I-shaped, L-shaped, or U-shaped sofa, ensure they come in pairs. I-shaped sofas are ideal for narrow spaces, L-shaped sofas create an embracing atmosphere, and U-shaped sofas are perfect for larger families, offering a cozy gathering space.

Do 2: Maintain a Square and Spacious Living Room

Avoid dividing or splitting the living room. While it may be tempting to create a temporary bedroom in the living room to maximize space, doing so in feng shui is considered self-cutting, leading to feelings of isolation and loneliness, especially for single individuals. Instead, keep the living room intact, preferably in a square or rectangular shape.

Ensure a logical flow between areas. The living room should be the first space you enter, with private areas like the kitchen, bedrooms, and bathrooms located further inside. Avoid having the front door directly facing the bathroom to prevent energy leakage. If this can’t be changed, place white quartz balls in the four corners of the room and hang curtains in the bathroom. The living room should also occupy at least one-fourth of the total house area and not be smaller than the bedrooms.

Keep the floor and walls even and smooth. This symbolizes a solid foundation for the family. Avoid uneven floors or walls with multiple levels, as they can create a sense of imbalance and unease.

Do 3: Identify and Enhance the Wealth Corner

The wealth corner, or “financial position,” is typically located in the diagonal corner from the front door at a 45-degree angle. Keep this area clean and bright. Display wealth-attracting items such as a treasure bowl, symbolic creatures (toads, pixiu…), crystals, or quartz. Place real coins or feng shui coins (168 for prosperity or 888 for wealth) under the crystals.

Decorate with real plants, favoring broad-leaved varieties such as money plants, jade plants, spider plants, Japanese bamboo, or mother-in-law’s tongue. These plants represent growth and prosperity. Ensure they are potted in soil rather than water at the wealth position.

Do 4: Ensure a Bright and Vibrant Living Room

A bright and well-lit living room enhances positive energy and promotes financial prosperity. Avoid placing large, dense potted plants on the balcony, as they can block natural light. Opt for ceiling lights that shine on the walls (not directly downward) and consider round fixtures for a sense of completeness.

Paint the walls in light, warm tones such as off-white, beige, blush pink, or cream to create a spacious and inviting atmosphere. Steer clear of overly dark or gloomy colors that can weigh down the space and impact the mood and energy of the room.

3 Don’ts in the Kitchen

Don’t 1: Place the Stove Opposite the Sink, Toilet, or Washing Machine

One of the most common feng shui taboos is placing the stove directly opposite or too close to the sink, toilet, or washing machine. This is because the stove represents Fire, while these water-related areas represent Water. In feng shui, these elements are incompatible, and their direct opposition can lead to disharmony and instability in the home.

Additionally, having the stove near the toilet can compromise food safety and introduce dirty air into the cooking area. If relocation isn’t possible, use a lightweight partition, cabinets, or plants (representing the Wood element) to neutralize the energy.

Don’t 2: Position the Stove Under a Beam or Behind a Toilet Wall

In some apartments or houses, the stove may be located under a beam or against a wall shared with a toilet. According to feng shui, a beam above the stove creates a sense of pressure and can lead to mental stress and financial constraints. If the stove leans against a toilet wall, the dirty qi from the toilet can negatively impact health and fortune.

To mitigate this, you can install a false ceiling or hang a feng shui gourd to reduce the impact of the beam. If the stove backs onto a toilet wall, maintain cleanliness, keep the toilet door closed when not in use, and consider hanging a feng shui painting or using bright tiles to improve the energy.

Don’t 3: Clutter the Kitchen with Old Items

Feng shui strongly discourages clutter and mess in the kitchen. Piling up old pots, pans, and broken appliances not only looks unsightly but also creates stagnant energy, blocking the flow of positive energy. Over time, this can lead to fatigue and family conflicts, and hinder career progress.

Maintain a tidy, bright, and airy kitchen, regularly decluttering and disposing of old items. A well-organized kitchen not only improves feng shui but also brings joy to the cook, uplifting the energy of the entire home.
