According to data from the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), after a sharp decline in 2024, tuna exports to France in the first half of 2025 rebounded. Specifically, export value reached over $1.5 million, up 108% over the same period in 2024. According to the International Trade Center (ITC) in 2024, France is the third largest importer of tuna in the EU, with a preference for convenient, safe, and sustainably certified products.

The main products include frozen tuna loin/meat and canned tuna. Compared to the same period in 2024, exports of frozen tuna loin/meat from Vietnam this year have increased significantly. Orders have continuously been shipped to this market in the first six months.

In 2024, France imported approximately 107,000 tons of tuna, including canned tuna products, and is a major consumer in Europe. The average French consumes 1.3 kg of tuna per year, about half of Malta (3.4 kg/person) but among the highest in the EU. Canned tuna consumption in France is growing due to the trend of quick and protein-rich meals and healthy choices, especially from brands like Petit Navire, Saupiquet, and Rio Mare, with many products carrying the MSC certification.

The French tuna market is highly competitive among suppliers. Among intra-bloc sources, Spain and Portugal account for a large proportion of processed product supplies (canned and frozen fillets) to France. They have advantages in processing scale, short logistic chains within the EU, and well-known brands on supermarket shelves.

Regarding extra-bloc sources, Ecuador remains the main supplier of tuna. With a strong fishing fleet and preferential tariffs when exporting to the EU, Ecuador’s tuna products are always competitively priced, especially canned tuna.

In addition to Ecuador, Seychelles, Côte d’Ivoire, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam have been striving to increase exports to the French market in recent years. Vietnam stands out in frozen fillets/loins and some value-added processed products.

As of 2024, Vietnamese tuna was exported to about 80 countries worldwide, including demanding markets such as Italy, Poland, Canada, Chile, and Portugal. In 2024, Vietnam’s tuna export turnover reached $989 million, up 17% from the previous year.
