Toyota is taking a strategic step towards electrification by commencing CKD assembly of its first all-electric SUV, the bZ4X, in Indonesia. This move by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) aims to enhance the competitiveness of the automotive industry in the country amid the shift to the electric era, while also leveraging the advantages of preferential intra-ASEAN tax policies.

If the localization rate meets the requirements, the bZ4X could be exported from Indonesia to Vietnam with a 0% import tax rate, offering a significantly “softer” price compared to imports from Japan. Previously, the bZ4X made its first appearance in Vietnam at the Vietnam Motor Show 2022, but it has not yet been officially released for sale.

According to Mr. Nandi Julyanto, President of TMMIN, the locally-produced bZ4X will share the same battery module as the Hilux BEV, but the cost remains high due to limited production volume, which will decrease as market demand increases.
Mr. Bob Azam, Vice President of TMMIN, stated that the decision to choose the bZ4X as the first electric vehicle to be CKD-assembled in Indonesia was based on positive market feedback and aligns with the goal of making Indonesia a hub for battery manufacturing and developing the auxiliary industry in the future.

Toyota plans to commence production of the bZ4X in Indonesia within the next six months, starting with premium models and gradually expanding to more affordable options. This decision not only strengthens domestic supply chains but also positions Indonesia as the only ASEAN country to produce the bZ4X through CKD assembly, thereby enhancing its competitiveness in exports to other regional countries, including Vietnam.
The Toyota bZ4X offers various engine configurations. The Indonesian-assembled version will feature an electric motor with 221 horsepower and a 73.1 kWh battery, offering a range of 573 km under the WLTP standard. The vehicle will have front-wheel drive.
