Trendy Lanterns Taking Over the Market
A quick scan of e-commerce platforms reveals that “foreign” and trendy lantern designs are outselling traditional ones. Notably, these products are extremely affordable, ranging from just a few thousand to a few tens of thousands of dong per lantern.
According to a survey of an online store, the rattan rabbit lantern with a price range of 17,000 – 45,000 dong/piece has been purchased over 1,000 times; the Baby Three and Labubu trendy lanterns priced at 19,000 – 95,000 dong/piece have sold over 10,000; and the conical lantern with the national flag at 15,000 – 25,000 dong/piece has also been purchased almost 1,000 times,…


A variety of new lantern designs are being sold for the Mid-Autumn Festival
On social media, many small businesses confirm that lantern sales are picking up, with most orders coming from wholesale buyers. Ms. Truong Duyen, a lantern seller, shared that popular designs often need to be ordered in advance and can take 3-5 days to produce.
Wholesale prices are currently very competitive. For instance, the conical lantern with golden stars is priced at 11,500 – 13,000 dong/piece, Baby Three size 6cm lanterns range from 10,800 – 11,900 dong/piece, animal lanterns are 8,800 – 10,000 dong/piece, and reflective lanterns cost 2,900 – 5,000 dong/piece (an additional 1,800 dong is charged if an LED light is included).
Similarly, Ms. Dang Trang, another seller, mentioned that the golden star lanterns are currently in high demand due to the upcoming National Day on September 2nd, with wholesale prices ranging from 10,500 – 11,500 dong/piece.
Imported from China
Meanwhile, the Baby Three lantern design is sold out, and many shops are taking orders for future deliveries. In addition to lanterns, separate assembly accessories are also offered at low prices for customers who prefer to build their own.
According to several vendors, most of this year’s lanterns are imported from China. They are not only purchased for the Mid-Autumn Festival but also in bulk for the upcoming National Day celebrations on September 2nd.
