The fire of insurrection spread rapidly from Hanoi. In Hue, on the morning of August 23, tens of thousands of people from all walks of life converged on Ngo Mon, carrying flags, banners, and slogans. The conical hats were packed in the midday sun of Central Vietnam, their voices echoing along the Perfume River, accompanied by the drums and gongs of the lengthy protest marches. In Saigon, on August 25, a sea of people flooded the main streets, with banners and red flags with yellow stars covering the intersections. Many chanted slogans as they marched, some carrying loudspeakers, horns, and drums, and the vast majority of the populace joined in. In just a few days, the people had overthrown the government in almost every locality.
The August Revolution brought an end to nearly a century of French colonial rule and five years of Japanese fascist occupation. This was not just a political victory, but also the complete liberation of a nation from double slavery. The Vietnamese people transitioned from a colonial existence to a new era of independence and self-determination.

This triumph stemmed from the wisdom of President Ho Chi Minh, the Communist Party of Vietnam, and the Viet Minh Front in seizing a once-in-a-millennium opportunity. In August 1945, with the surrender of Japanese fascists to the Allies, the puppet government collapsed, and the people of Vietnam were brimming with revolutionary fervor. President Ho Chi Minh and the Party Central Committee seized this decisive moment to launch a general uprising for national liberation. As Uncle Ho affirmed: “The opportune moment has arrived, and we must resolutely fight for independence, even if it means burning down the entire Truong Son Range.”
The August Revolution was a rare phenomenon in human history: in just over two weeks, a nearly century-old colonial-fascist regime was toppled and replaced by a revolutionary government of, by, and for the people. Moreover, this revolution was almost bloodless. This miracle was not due to advanced weaponry or a massive army but to the people’s unwavering faith in their just cause and their unity.

August 19 endowed our nation with three core values: Independence – the right to determine our future; Freedom – liberating individuals from oppression to live and pursue happiness; and National Pride – the dignity to hold our heads high among nations, standing as equals. These values are an enduring source of strength, cherished and nurtured throughout our history.
Over the past 80 years, Vietnam has come a long way, transforming from a war-torn, impoverished, and devastated country into a dynamic economy deeply integrated with the world. However, we still face challenges: global competitive pressures, climate change, technological innovation, and governance reforms. In this context, the spirit of August 19 remains a wellspring of strength, urging every Vietnamese to think bigger, act better, and take responsibility for the country’s future.
Today, this spirit must be manifested in concrete actions: workers must be more dedicated and innovative; businesses must enhance competitiveness and integrity; officials and party members must prioritize national interests over personal gains. If our forefathers fought for independence 80 years ago, it is our duty today to secure a worthy position for Vietnam among developed, powerful, and civilized nations.

The aspiration for a strong Vietnam is not merely a dream but a commitment: leaving no one behind, ensuring no one goes hungry, homeless, or without clothing; providing education for all children, quality healthcare for every citizen, a creative environment for scientists, and freedom for entrepreneurs within the framework of the law; and guaranteeing social equity. It is also the vision of a nation that preserves its cultural identity, protects its environment, and contributes to global peace and prosperity.
Today, we still witness this unwavering patriotism and solidarity among the youth as they fill stadiums, stands, and streets with the colors of the national flag and sing the Army March in unison.
As we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution, we remember those who sacrificed their lives, honor the generation of our forefathers, and reaffirm our oath: to safeguard independence, preserve freedom, uphold national pride, and propel our nation further. This is our journey of nation-building and defense, safeguarding the achievements initiated by the August Revolution. From the autumn of 1945 to the present, this journey has never ceased—and from this autumn onward, we march forward, confidently stepping into a new era, aspiring to build a strong, prosperous, civilized, and thriving Vietnam, where people truly enjoy warmth and happiness.
