The First Glimpse: Unveiling the Billion-Dollar Underpass Project on National Highway 13

The Phuoc Kien intersection has been chosen as the site for the first underpass to be constructed on National Highway 13 in Ho Chi Minh City. The busy route, particularly the Huynh Van Cu section, has long been a bottleneck for traffic, with a constant stream of trucks, containers, and cars causing lengthy tailbacks as they queue to cross the Phu Cuong Bridge towards Thu Dau Mot.

On August 20th, representatives from the Management Board of Binh Duong Traffic Infrastructure Projects, under the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, announced the commencement of construction on a tunnel project at the Phuoc Kien Junction.

The Phuoc Kien Junction is located at the intersection of National Highway 13 (Binh Duong Avenue), Pham Ngoc Thach Street, Nguyen Van Tiet Street, and Huynh Van Cu Street in Thu Dau Mot and Phu Loi wards, Ho Chi Minh City.

Trucks and container trucks heading from Tay Ninh and Cu Chi in Ho Chi Minh City, carrying goods to Provincial Road 8 and then to Huynh Van Cu Street towards Phuoc Kien Junction, continue their journey onto Pham Ngoc Thach Street and onto My Phuoc Tan Van Road. Huynh Van Cu Street experiences frequent congestion and vehicle backups.

The construction of the tunnel at Phuoc Kien Junction aims to alleviate traffic congestion on Huynh Van Cu Street. The tunnel will be designed to facilitate traffic flow from Huynh Van Cu Street to Pham Ngoc Thach Street, addressing the issue of vehicle backups.

This is the first tunnel project in Binh Duong Province before the merger and the first on National Highway 13 in the new Ho Chi Minh City.

At the Phuoc Kien Junction, National Highway 13, Pham Ngoc Thach, and Nguyen Van Tiet do not experience congestion and only see heavy traffic during rush hours. However, the section of Huynh Van Cu Street from Cu Chi to Thu Dau Mot frequently faces traffic jams, with rows of trucks, containers, and cars lined up for kilometers during certain times.

The tunnel is designed to direct traffic from Huynh Van Cu Street to Pham Ngoc Thach Street and onto My Phuoc Tan Van Road.

National Highway 13, spanning over 70 kilometers in Ho Chi Minh City, sees the Phuoc Kien Junction as the first location chosen for a tunnel project.

The project, with a total investment of 1,050 billion VND, was approved by the People’s Committee of Binh Duong Province before the merger in late 2022. (Image: Phuoc Kien Junction perspective)
