The $120 Million Bridge on the Ben Luc – Long Thanh Expressway Nears Completion

The Binh Khanh Bridge, spanning the Soai Rap River, is a pivotal connection between the former Hiep Phuoc district (now a part of Nha Be, Ho Chi Minh City) and Binh Khanh district (formerly of Can Gio, Ho Chi Minh City). With a total length of over 2.76 kilometers, this vital link in the Ben Luc - Long Thanh Highway began construction in August 2015, carrying an initial investment of over VND 2,800 billion. This ambitious project is set to reach completion by the end of August 2025, marking a significant milestone in the region's infrastructure development.

The Binh Khanh Bridge is part of the J1 contract, which includes the construction of the Binh Khanh Bridge and its approach roads, on the Ben Luc – Long Thanh Expressway. Spanning the Soai Rap River, the bridge connects the former Nha Be and Can Gio districts in Ho Chi Minh City. With a total length of over 2.76 km, the bridge boasts an impressive main span of 765 meters.

The Ben Luc – Long Thanh Expressway, stretching across 57.8 km, connects Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai Province. In early 2025, the Vietnam Expressway Corporation – VEC (the investor) inaugurated and put into operation nearly 30 km of the expressway, comprising two sections: the western section from the intersection with the Ho Chi Minh City – Trung Luong Expressway to the Nguyen Van Tao intersection, and the section from Phuoc An to National Highway 51.

The J1 contract, funded by JICA, is valued at over VND 2,800 billion for construction. The supervision consultant is KEI – NE – OCG – TEDI, and the contractor is a joint venture between Shimizu Corporation and Vinaconex Construction and Technical Investment Joint Stock Company.

The bridge deck is 21.75 meters wide, accommodating four vehicle lanes and two emergency lanes, fully meeting the standards of modern expressways.

Construction of the bridge began in August 2015 but was halted in late 2018 due to funding issues after reaching approximately 70% completion. The project was restarted in late 2023, and currently, the contract is nearly 98% complete, with the main bridge construction progressing as scheduled.

For the approach roads, efforts are being made to expedite the construction of the remaining work, including the installation of guardrails and median barriers. The Binh Khanh Bridge is scheduled to be completed by the end of August 2025.

Another significant bridge on the Ben Luc – Long Thanh Expressway, the Phuoc Khanh Bridge, which spans the Long Tau River and connects the former Can Gio district in Ho Chi Minh City with the former Nhon Trach district in Dong Nai Province, was also restarted in May 2025.

The Phuoc Khanh Bridge is planned to be completed and opened to traffic in September 2026.

With the upcoming completion of the Binh Khanh Bridge (J1 contract) and the Phuoc Khanh Bridge (J3 contract, expected to be finished in 2026), the Ben Luc – Long Thanh Expressway will be fully connected.

This will establish a vital inter-regional transportation link in the southern region. The Binh Khanh Bridge is the largest bridge on the entire route, with a total investment of over VND 2,800 billion.
