Laos is gearing up to supply approximately 400 tons of high-quality durian to domestic and international markets by 2026.

On August 8, Mr. Elavan Ladpakdee, representing the Laos Durian Business Group, shared at a durian technical training session that the country currently has 269 hectares of durian plantations with 18,957 trees. Of these, 3,312 trees have borne fruit, and 15,645 are in the harvesting phase, according to Laotiantimes.

To achieve this goal, the training program focused on improving cultivation techniques, orchard management, disease prevention, and value-added processing to enhance the market value of the crop.

Participants were also guided on Laos’ agricultural export standards and regulations, as well as the necessary documentation for exporting fresh durian.

According to Mr. Elavan, the country is preparing every step, from seed to transportation, to ensure that Lao durian meets the highest quality standards.

China is predicted to be a major buyer, so Laos aims to capitalize on its proximity to China and improve logistics through the Laos-China Railway to reduce costs and enhance export efficiency.

Durian, often dubbed the “king of fruits,” is renowned throughout Southeast Asia for its creamy, soft flesh and distinctive aroma. With fertile land, skilled farmers, and a growing market interest, Laos aims to compete with top durian producers in the region, such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam.

Previously, Cambodia made headway in the durian export race. Earlier this month, Cambodia exported two tons of fresh durian to Henan Province in China by air for the first time.

Cambodia officially received permission from the General Administration of Customs China (GACC) to commence direct exports of fresh durian to the Chinese market after signing a protocol in April.

In July, the first batch of 17 tons of fresh Cambodian durian was shipped to China in the official first delivery to this highly competitive market.
