This morning, the 24th of August, the atmosphere in the heart of Hanoi was buzzing with excitement as hundreds of people gathered along the streets to camp out and secure their spots for the second rehearsal of the grand military parade and procession in celebration of the upcoming National Day on the 2nd of September. As early as 6 to 7 a.m., many had already set up their mats, folding chairs, umbrellas, and packed drinks and snacks for the long wait.
Among the hundreds of memorable moments captured, what stood out the most was a sumptuous spread of chicken and colorful sticky rice, known as “xoi ga” in Vietnamese. This traditional dish, presented on a large tray, included boiled chicken, five-colored sticky rice, wild boar meat, and other delicious treats, leaving onlookers in awe.

The now-viral photos of the delicious spread of “xoi ga” have captured the hearts of many on social media.
The owners of this wonderful feast are a group of four sisters, including Bui Thi Ly, who traveled all the way from Lac Son (formerly part of Hoa Binh province, now in Phu Tho). Ly shared: “We left home at 3:30 a.m. and were very excited to watch the rehearsal today. This spread features specialties from our hometown!”
The group meticulously prepared and brought along delicacies such as five-colored sticky rice, spicy bamboo shoots, blanched vegetables, boiled chicken, wild boar meat, and “banh Uoi” (a traditional cake). The colorful feast was a sight to behold: the golden-brown boiled chicken, the vibrant five-colored sticky rice, the wild boar meat, and the humble yet unique blanched vegetables.
The abundance and presentation of the “xoi ga” spread impressed many, but what made it even more special was the ‘viewing spot’ the group secured. They were strategically positioned to have a full view of the magnificent parade and procession, making their dining experience all the more memorable.
