Speaking to Tien Phong Newspaper on the evening of August 24th, Mr. Tran Quang Vu, Head of the Economic Infrastructure Department of Hai Van Ward, Da Nang, Vietnam, shared that forces and volunteers were still transporting and selling watermelon to support local farmers ahead of the incoming storm.
Watermelons were sold at two locations: Cho Nam O and 172 Nguyen Van Cu, with each melon priced at 7,000 VND, half the usual price. The melons were sourced from local farmers in Truong Dinh and Hoa Bac villages. Photo: T.H.
Local forces and volunteers came together to support farmers in Hai Van Ward by transporting and selling their watermelons at reduced prices ahead of the storm. This initiative aimed to prevent potential losses for farmers due to the perishable nature of the fruit.
In addition to the two main selling points, the ward also reached out to companies, factories, and businesses to help consume the farmers’ produce. From the afternoon to the evening of August 24th, tons of watermelons were transported and sold with the help of these dedicated forces.
Mr. Vu estimated that there were about 50 tons of watermelons ready for harvest in the area. With the ongoing rain and potential for more storms, there was a risk of significant losses for the farmers. The reduced price was a necessary measure to ensure the fruit could be sold, despite being lower than the usual market rate.
From August 24th to 25th, volunteers worked tirelessly to sell the remaining watermelons, aiming to minimize losses for the farmers. The initiative received a positive response, and everyone involved hoped to sell all the watermelons despite the low prices.
