According to Báo Đồng Nai, Mr. Nguyen Tien Viet, Deputy General Director of ACV, shared: “The initial plan for Long Thanh International Airport Phase 1 was to complete construction and commence operations by 2026. However, the Prime Minister has since requested an expedited timeline, aiming for substantial completion in 2025 and commercial operations in the first half of 2026. In alignment with the Prime Minister’s directive, ACV has been coordinating with contractors and equipment suppliers to adjust the schedules for the packages of the Component 3 Project of Long Thanh International Airport Phase 1.”
Regarding the progress of the packages, ACV confirmed that they are generally on track with the adjusted timelines. Mr. Nguyen Tien Viet stated, “By December 19, 2025, the construction will be completed. On the same day, the first technical flight from Noi Bai International Airport will land at Long Thanh International Airport.”
Mr. Nguyen Tien Viet also shared that Tan Son Nhat International Airport is expected to handle 18 million international passengers in 2025. He added, “It is forecasted that by the first half of 2026, when Long Thanh International Airport Phase 1 becomes operational, the number of international passengers will reach 20 million.”
Initiating Phase 2 Early to Prevent Operational Disruptions
According to ACV’s leadership, the passenger terminal of Long Thanh International Airport in Phase 1 is designed to accommodate 25 million passengers annually. When Phase 1 becomes operational, the expected international passenger volume is projected to reach 20 million per year. Therefore, it is imperative to immediately commence Phase 2 of the Long Thanh International Airport Project following the completion of Phase 1.
Mr. Viet emphasized the necessity of constructing an additional passenger terminal and a third runway to meet the anticipated demand.
During an onsite inspection of the Long Thanh International Airport Project on August 20, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly, Mr. Vu Hong Thanh, urged the involved units to exert greater efforts to achieve the goal of substantially completing the Long Thanh Airport Project by the end of this year.
To facilitate the commencement of Phase 1 operations in the first half of 2026, the Vice Chairman of the National Assembly instructed Dong Nai province and relevant units to expedite the completion of connecting roads, particularly National Highway 51 and the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway, due to frequent congestion in these areas.
“If we do not address this issue promptly, the traffic situation will worsen once the Long Thanh Airport becomes operational,” emphasized Vice Chairman of the National Assembly, Mr. Vu Hong Thanh.
Regarding the proposal to immediately initiate Phase 2 of the Long Thanh International Airport Project, the Vice Chairman of the National Assembly requested that ACV coordinate with relevant agencies to report to the National Assembly for consideration. The early implementation of Phase 2 aims to prevent potential disruptions to the airport’s operations during the construction of subsequent phases.
The Vice Chairman of the National Assembly also suggested commencing the investment in certain components of Phase 2 to mitigate the impact of construction and dust dispersal on the operations of Long Thanh International Airport Phase 1.
