According to Dr. Hoang Duong Tung, Chairman of the Vietnam Clean Air Network, transportation is the number one source of emissions in large cities. Ho Chi Minh City alone has approximately 9 million motorcycles and 1 million cars, while Hanoi has over 7 million motorcycles and 800,000 cars. The number of old vehicles emitting fine dust PM2.5 is increasing, causing the “pollution season” to become the city’s fifth season. He emphasized: “Clean air doesn’t come by itself, but through decisive actions every day.”

Dialogue on “Emission Reduction and Air Purification” held by Thanh Nien Newspaper

Not only road transport but also aviation is under pressure to reduce emissions as the world moves towards the Net Zero emission target by 2050. Sharing by Mr. To Viet Thang – Permanent Vice President of Vietjet at the dialogue gave a clearer view of the green flight journey of Vietjet and the entire Vietnamese aviation industry.

Mr. To Viet Thang shared: “Sustainable development has always been Vietjet’s top priority.” The new-generation airline has published its ESG report and implemented many solutions, such as carbon offsetting through credits, reforestation, investment in renewable energy, technology optimization, periodic engine washing, and AI application in operations to optimize costs and fuel. As a result, each passenger on a Vietjet flight reduces emissions by an average of 38% compared to older aircraft.

“According to statistics, each seat per kilometer emits 50 grams of CO2. Vietjet’s fleet is modern and optimized for operational efficiency. Pilots must fly to minimize emissions, and flight planners must find the shortest, most efficient, and lightest route for the aircraft, regularly washing the engine… In recent years, the company has also used environmentally friendly products on the plane. So, if passengers want to reduce their carbon footprint, choosing Vietjet will give them the smallest footprint,” said Mr. Thang.

Vietjet also takes the lead in researching and using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 80%. In 2024, Vietjet successfully operated the first flights using SAF in Vietnam and flew to Australia and South Korea. In August, the airline signed a cooperation agreement to consume SAF blended in Vietnam, a new step in the production and consumption of SAF in the country.

The green commitments and sustainable development of the aviation industry, including Vietjet, are driving the green transition and motivating the entire economy. When businesses dare to pioneer technology and invest sustainably, and the community joins hands, environmental challenges will turn into development opportunities for the country in the new era.

Mr. Nguyen Dong Phong, Director of the Vehicle Emission Testing Center (Vietnam Register), said that pollutants currently include on-site emissions, emissions from production and business activities, and greenhouse gas emissions. While greenhouse gases are a global issue, on-site emissions are everyone’s story. The leader of the Register affirmed that the process of switching to green and clean energy without emissions is still challenging.
