Robusta’s Hot Streak and Bubble Concerns

The London-based Robusta coffee price on the London exchange in the UK rose again early this morning, August 27 (Vietnam time), after a three-day break, marking the fifth consecutive session of gains, up $40/ton to $4,690/ton for the November 2025 contract.

In the past five trading sessions, the price of Robusta for this futures contract has surged by $623/ton, approaching the $5,000/ton mark.

For the September 2025 contract, the price of Robusta rose $20/ton to $4,886/ton, while the price of Arabica on the New York exchange in the US fell $130/ton to $8,470/ton.

Domestic coffee prices are expected to rebound from the buying price of 122,000 VND/kg; some agents quoted a price of 123,000 VND/kg with moisture content not exceeding 15%, impurities 1%, black and broken 2%, and brown 9%.

The rise in Robusta prices is good news for coffee farmers, but it also raises concerns about the role of speculators in the market, as Brazil had a bumper crop this year.

Brazil’s Robusta, also known as Conilon, produced about 25 million bags, almost equal to Vietnam’s output (around 29-30 million bags), but is currently being sold slowly, not due to lack of supply.

Japan Reduces Vietnamese Coffee Imports by 19%

The increase in Vietnamese Robusta prices is positive news, but it also carries the risk of losing market share.

According to statistics from the Japan Customs Agency, in the first six months of 2025, Japan imported 191,000 tons of coffee, worth nearly $1.26 billion, down 4.3% in volume but up 48.9% in value compared to the same period in 2024 due to price increases.

Vietnam was the second-largest coffee supplier to Japan during this period, but its market share fell to 27.7% from 32.8% in the first six months of 2024.

In the first six months, Japan imported 52,900 tons of coffee from Vietnam, down 19% with an average unit price of $5,772/ton, up 67.5%, while the average coffee price for all markets increased by 55.5%.
