Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) has recently petitioned a National Assembly task force to expedite investment in phase 2 of the Long Thanh International Airport project. This move aims to meet the growing demand for passenger transportation and mitigate the impact of construction on the operation of the airport’s phase 1.
Construction underway on the second runway of Long Thanh Airport.
In phase 1, the Long Thanh International Airport is designed with a single runway, a passenger terminal capable of serving 25 million passengers annually, cargo terminals with a total capacity of 1.2 million tons of cargo per year, and other auxiliary facilities.
Back in March, the Prime Minister approved adjustments to the Long Thanh Airport project’s first phase, including the addition of a second runway to be constructed simultaneously.
The passenger terminal and other airport facilities are expected to be completed by December 19.
According to Mr. Nguyen Tien Viet, Deputy General Director of ACV, the initial plan was to complete and operate the airport by 2026. However, the Prime Minister has directed efforts to expedite construction, aiming for substantial completion in 2026 and commercial operation by mid-2026.
Currently, the project’s packages are mostly on track with the adjusted schedule. By December 19, the construction is expected to be finished, and the first technical flight will land at Long Thanh Airport on the same day.
Mr. Viet projected that by the time phase 1 of the Long Thanh International Airport is operational, international passenger volume is expected to reach 20 million per year. Therefore, it is imperative to immediately commence phase 2 of the project, which includes the construction of an additional passenger terminal and a third runway, to meet the growing demand.
Vice Chairman of the National Assembly, Mr. Vu Hong Thanh, requested that ACV coordinate with relevant agencies to report to the National Assembly and seek approval for immediate implementation. This proactive approach will help prevent potential issues caused by construction dust during the operation of phase 1 of the airport.
