On the morning of August 28, several wards and communes in Nghe An province were still without power following Typhoon number 5. Crowds gathered at electrical appliance stores in Vinh Hung ward, Nghe An province, to inquire about and purchase generators.

There are various types of generators available, offering different price points and power outputs. Smaller generators, fueled by gasoline or diesel, are priced at 5-8 million VND. Larger units with higher power outputs of 20-25 million VND are also in high demand and quickly selling out.

Nguyen Thi Hoai, a resident of Hai Loc commune in Nghe An province, traveled over 20 kilometers to a store on Mai Hac De street in Vinh Hung ward to purchase a generator. After careful consideration, she decided to buy a 19 million VND generator for her family’s use. “We’ve been without power and water for four days since the typhoon hit,” she shared. “With young children and elderly family members at home, life without electricity is challenging. So, we decided to invest in a generator for peace of mind, and it will be useful in the long run.”

Technicians test each generator, fill it with oil, and perform a final check before handing it over to the customer. “Customers are quick to make purchases if the generator fits their budget and is available,” shared a staff member.

Nguyen Thi Mai, a resident of Hung Nguyen district in Nghe An province, shared her experience: “I had just returned from abroad a few days before Typhoon number 5 hit. Currently, we have no electricity, water, or even cellular network coverage. As the power outage is prolonged, and there is no estimate for when it will be restored, I decided to purchase a generator for my family’s use. Although the price is higher than usual, it is a necessary expense.”

Stores are continuously restocking generators to meet the high demand.

Mr. Thanh, the owner of a store on Mai Hac De street, shared: “Our sales have increased nearly five to seven times compared to regular days. We are constantly restocking, but the demand is so high that we often sell out as soon as new stock arrives. Sometimes, customers are waiting and ready to pay as soon as the generators are unloaded.”

Stores along Cao Thang street and near Cho Vinh are also bustling with customers looking to purchase generators.

Generators have become a lifeline for residents coping with power outages.

Typhoon Kajiki caused power outages in 148 out of 178 power lines and 6,440 out of 7,963 transformers in Nghe An province, affecting over 890,000 customers. By 5 PM on August 27, the province had restored power to 75 power lines and 4,031 transformers, reconnecting 558,715 customers.
