This is a testament to VIB’s unique vision, as the number of cards issued increased tenfold since 2019, propelling the bank to the top spots in the market. With this impressive growth, VIB now ranks among the leaders in Mastercard spending and overall market spending, while also partnering with the three major international card organizations: Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.

Prior to 2019, when credit cards were not yet widely adopted by Vietnamese users, the card market primarily operated through a traditional model. The products available tended to be complex, burdened with various fees, and lacked optimized user experiences. Recognizing the strong trend towards cashless payments and the opportunity to make a breakthrough in the market, VIB embarked on a transformation of its credit card business starting in late 2018, laying the foundation for its “Leading the Card Trend” strategy.

VIB’s journey towards transforming its credit card business began with a strategic repositioning, shifting the focus from issuing conventional cards to creating a diverse, personalized, and deeply integrated card ecosystem within the digital lives of its users. This strategy is built upon three main pillars: Technology, Experience, and Benefits.

Staying Ahead with Technological Innovations

VIB’s “Leading the Card Trend” strategy is closely aligned with the bank’s robust digital transformation journey. Recognizing the pivotal role of technology, VIB boldly invested in and applied advanced technologies, making its first market-leading imprints.

VIB was a pioneer in leveraging Big Data and AI in its card approval process as early as 2020. This technology enables automatic and accurate analysis and evaluation of customer profiles, drastically reducing the card issuance time from days to just 15-30 minutes. As a result, users can now apply for a credit card on their computers or mobile devices without income proof or branch visits.

As the first bank to introduce a card that allows users to choose their own features, VIB empowers cardholders to design their own cards: from selecting cashback categories, statement dates, and minimum payment ratios to choosing the last five digits of their card numbers.

VIB is also the first bank to utilize information from the electronic identification and authentication system, with citizen consent, for online credit card applications through the VNeID application since October 17, 2024. This not only streamlines the application process but also ensures information security for both citizens and banking activities.

The bank has also employed augmented reality (AR) technology to create a “talking card” and GenAI for personalized card designs, elevating the experience beyond mere payment functions.

VIB has conducted in-depth research into customer behavior and preferences to create a diverse card collection that caters to both basic needs and premium experiences. Regardless of their demographics, income levels, ages, or interests, VIB’s 10 specialized credit card lines meet their spending needs, be it for shopping (Cash Back, Super Card, Online Plus 2in1), travel (Travel Élite, Premier Boundless), family and education (Family Link, Ivy Card), or business financing (Business Card).

While customers were accustomed to credit cards with predefined features, VIB took the lead in personalizing products to meet individual needs. With the Super Card, customers can design their own card features, and with Super Cash, they can proactively manage their credit limits and cash advance limits of up to VND 1 billion. Super Pay further empowers customers to take control of their card transactions.

Leveraging its superior technology platform, VIB focuses on crafting a seamless and simple customer experience journey, where every touchpoint can make a difference. The MyVIB digital banking application serves as the ecosystem’s hub, enabling customers to easily manage all aspects of their cards: from card activation, locking/unlocking, and statement viewing to debt repayment, enrollment in 0% interest installment plans, and redemption of accumulated reward points for cash, vouchers, or annual fees. All these tasks can be accomplished with just a few taps, providing customers with maximum convenience and autonomy.

Going beyond features, VIB creates unique experiences by applying augmented reality (AR) to credit cards, transforming the physical card into a “talking card” that visually and engagingly conveys promotional information. AI-powered solutions allow customers to design cards with their own unique appearances and colors.

Instead of applying blanket policies, VIB implements personalized promotions tailored to individual spending habits, ensuring optimal benefits for each customer segment.
