Introducing the TBM “Super Robot”: Unveiling Hanoi’s Metro Dream

The TBM, a “super robot” that captivates the hearts of many.
Introducing Hanoi’s First Metro Dream: Unveiling the TBM “Super Robot”
Have you ever walked past Cat Linh or Van Mieu and wondered about the “super robot” tunneling beneath the bustling city? Meet the TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine), a colossal machine with a length of several dozen meters and weighing hundreds of tons. The TBM is capable of drilling through complex geological layers while simultaneously installing tunnel liners during the excavation process. This innovative technology allows for the construction of metro lines right in the heart of Hanoi, ensuring the safety of the city’s infrastructure.
The allure of the TBM lies not only in its massive scale and technological sophistication but also in its representation of Hanoi’s long-awaited metro dream. The introduction of an underground railway system will revolutionize intra-city transportation, making travel faster, more civilized, and environmentally friendly. For many, the metro embodies a modern Hanoi, a city embracing global integration.

Visitors flock to the FECON exhibit to catch a glimpse of the TBM model.
During the exhibition, hundreds of curious visitors flocked to the FECON booth to witness the “super robot” model up close. Besides enthusiastic check-ins, many young visitors engaged in conversations with FECON engineers, eager to learn about the operation of this gigantic machine, which they had previously only heard about through the media.
Nguyen Hoang Anh, a third-year student in the field of construction, shared his excitement: “We are truly inspired to know that the future metro lines of Hanoi are being built using TBM technology operated by Vietnamese engineers. This serves as a great motivation for us to pursue our chosen career paths.”
The exhibit attracted not only students but also older visitors who were fascinated to see the TBM model and hear the story of this “wonder beneath the ground.” Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Vi, a retired military officer, expressed his admiration: “I am in awe of the Vietnamese engineers, and I eagerly await the day when I can experience riding the metro in Hanoi.”
FECON: Forging Ahead with Underground Innovations

Behind this “super robot” is FECON, a seasoned enterprise with over 20 years of experience. FECON has left its mark on more than 600 projects nationwide, including several National Key Projects. In the construction of Metro Line 3, FECON engineers and workers are at the helm of two TBM robots named “Thantoc” and “Taobao,” continuously achieving significant milestones as the robots advance into the underground stations of S10 Cat Linh and S11 Van Mieu. Each completed tunnel section stands as a testament to Vietnamese technical prowess and resilience in embracing advanced global technology.

FECON representatives share their pride in Vietnamese engineering achievements.
A FECON representative proudly stated: “Through the exhibition ’80 Years of Independence, Freedom, and Happiness,’ we aim to showcase not just the technology and TBM model but also the story of Vietnamese aspiration and intelligence. Young people should take pride in knowing that the world’s most advanced tunneling technology is being mastered by Vietnamese engineers right here in the capital.”
Experiencing Technology: Igniting the Vietnamese Aspiration
The exhibition, “80 Years of Independence, Freedom, and Happiness,” not only commemorates the nation’s journey over eight decades but also fuels aspirations for the future. For young visitors, it serves as an opportunity to engage with cutting-edge technology and understand the intellectual prowess, resilience, and aspirations of the Vietnamese people behind every infrastructure project.
