The King of Fruits: A Risky Venture with Sweet Rewards

The durian is known as the "king" of fruits, and for good reason. Its value lies in its unparalleled quality. If the fruit fails to meet expectations, farmers may sell at a loss, and businesses buying it will inevitably face losses as well. However, when the durian meets the standards of excellence, businesses can purchase it at a premium and still turn a profit.

The soursop harvest is underway in Dak Lak, the country’s soursop capital. However, the atmosphere is less vibrant than in previous years.

According to Le Anh Trung from the Dak Lak Soursop Association, the purchasing, packaging, and exporting processes continue as usual, but the competitive buying and selling atmosphere has diminished.

This year, import partners (China) have tightened their requirements for plant quarantine and food safety.

From farmers to traders and exporting businesses, everyone is cautious and vigilant about product quality.

Huynh Tan Loi, a soursop buyer from Quang Phu commune in Dak Lak with over ten years of experience, shared that this commodity can bring quick profits but also entails high risks. Buying low-quality, unripe fruits can result in significant losses.

In fact, Mr. Loi and many other traders have experienced the challenge of driving through the night to find warehouses to sell their soursop. When the quality is not up to par, warehouse owners reject the produce, downgrading it to lower-grade fruit, which results in substantial losses.

As a buyer and direct exporter to the Chinese market, Ms. Tran Thi Yen Thu, Director of Hong Sang Fruit Company, emphasized that quality is the decisive factor in pricing, consumption, and the reputation of Vietnamese soursop. When quality is assured, farmers can obtain better prices and have peace of mind regarding their produce’s marketability.

According to the Dak Lak Soursop Association, prices depend on quality. If the product is unripe or fails to meet residue standards, businesses must discard it. In such cases, even a price of 35,000 VND/kg ($1.49) won’t attract buyers, resulting in losses for the businesses. Conversely, if farmers follow proper procedures, implement traceability, and control residue effectively, a higher proportion of premium-quality fruit can be achieved, allowing farmers to sell at 75,000 VND/kg ($3.2) while still ensuring profits for businesses.

According to statistics, Dak Lak has nearly 40,000 hectares of soursop, with an expected output of over 390,000 tons in 2025. The yield and quality of soursop this year are considered stable, with more uniform fruit size and an increase in the proportion suitable for official export. This is a positive sign for the sustainable development of the industry.
