The Next Affordable Hybrid Cars for Vietnam: Xforce, Xpander, City, and Vios – All Under 4.83L/100km

In anticipation of the proposed fuel economy standards, hybrid vehicles are seen as a sensible stepping stone towards full electrification. With the upcoming introduction of models such as the Mitsubishi Xforce and Xpander, as well as the Honda City and Toyota Vios hybrids, consumers in Vietnam can look forward to a more accessible and affordable entry into the world of hybrid technology. These vehicles offer a promising glimpse into a future of reduced emissions and increased energy efficiency, all while maintaining a price point that is within reach for many.

The new national technical standards draft aims for an average fuel consumption of just 4.83 liters per 100 km by 2030. This stringent threshold poses a challenge for conventional gasoline vehicles, while the electric vehicle infrastructure is not yet ready. In this context, hybrid technology emerges as a suitable interim solution.

Here are four potential mass-market hybrid vehicles that could enter the Vietnamese market:

Mitsubishi Xforce

The Mitsubishi Xforce HEV on sale in Thailand marks a significant shift as all Xforce models in this market transition to hybrid powertrains, phasing out gasoline-only options. This move underscores Mitsubishi’s commitment to electrification in the urban SUV segment in Thailand. It is plausible that the Xforce in Vietnam could also embrace hybrid technology in the near future.

The standout feature of the Xforce HEV is its hybrid powertrain. It combines a 1.6L gasoline engine producing 95 horsepower and 134 Nm of torque with a potent electric motor generating 116 horsepower and 255 Nm of torque. Accompanying this setup is a 1.1 kWh battery. According to the manufacturer, this hybrid setup yields an impressive fuel economy of 4.1 liters per 100 km, comfortably meeting the proposed standard of 4.83 liters per 100 km.

Mitsubishi Xpander

Similar to the Xforce, the Mitsubishi Xpander in Thailand has transitioned exclusively to a hybrid powertrain. While the Xpander in Thailand has not yet received the latest facelift introduced in Vietnam, it is conceivable that this MPV will offer a hybrid option or undergo a full hybrid transition in the domestic market.

The Xpander HEV employs a 1.6L gasoline engine generating 95 horsepower and 134 Nm of torque, complemented by an electric motor delivering 116 horsepower and 255 Nm of torque. The setup is paired with an e-CVT transmission and front-wheel drive. Strategically positioned under the front seats, the battery enables the Xpander HEV to achieve a manufacturer-claimed fuel economy of approximately 5.2 liters per 100 km.

Toyota Vios

In the B-segment sedan category, the Toyota Vios has been the slowest to receive updates. However, there is a strong possibility that the next-generation Vios will be introduced in Vietnam soon. While the Vios has recently undergone a refresh in Thailand under the name Yaris Ativ, the highlight is its hybrid powertrain.

The Yaris Ativ HEV shares its powertrain with the Yaris Cross HEV, combining a 1.5L gasoline engine producing 90 horsepower with a 79-horsepower electric motor, resulting in a total system output of 110 horsepower. The E-CVT transmission and lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 0.7 kWh further enhance efficiency. Thanks to this configuration, the Vios hybrid achieves an exceptional fuel economy of 3.4 liters per 100 km, making it the most fuel-efficient sedan in its class in Thailand.

Honda City

Honda is witnessing a trend towards “hybridization” in Vietnam, with the CR-V, HR-V, and Civic already offering hybrid variants. It is likely that the Honda City will follow suit. A hybrid version of the Honda City could be on the cards for the Vietnamese market.

In India, the Honda City e:HEV features a hybrid powertrain that combines a 1.5L naturally aspirated gasoline engine with two electric motors and an e-CVT transmission, resulting in a total system output of 126 horsepower. According to the manufacturer, the City hybrid boasts a fuel economy of approximately 3.8 liters per 100 km.
