According to Lloyd’s List, Vietnam’s maritime transport industry witnessed a remarkable surge in port cargo volume last year, largely influenced by the US-China trade tensions, prompting investors and shipping lines to diversify their supply chains in Southeast Asia.
The report reveals that the total cargo volume across the top 100 container ports reached 743.6 million Teu, an 8.1% increase year-on-year. Vietnam, along with India and Turkey, emerged as prominent beneficiaries of supply chain restructuring and regional trade agreements.
The three ports of Ho Chi Minh City, Haiphong, and Cai Mep are also Vietnam’s largest ports, classified as special ports. Haiphong and Cai Mep ports are strategically planned as international gateway and transshipment hubs, capable of accommodating large container vessels, thereby reducing logistics costs.
Recently, these three ports also made it to the top 50 container handling ports worldwide for 2024, as announced by DynaLiners Millionaires. This remarkable achievement has placed Vietnam in the 6th position among countries with the highest container-handling port capacity.
In the ranking of the world’s 100 busiest container ports by cargo volume, Asia continues to dominate. Notably, Chinese ports alone account for over 40% of global container traffic. Singapore’s port maintains its second position, handling over 41.1 million Teu, reinforcing its status as a leading global transshipment hub.
