A new national technical standard draft by the Registration Bureau (Ministry of Construction) aims to achieve an average fuel consumption (CAFC) of 4.83 liters/100 km for all passenger cars in Vietnam by 2030. While the goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it has raised concerns among automobile businesses.
However, the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA) argues that if this standard is applied, about 96% of conventional gasoline vehicles and 14% of hybrid vehicles currently sold in the market will not meet the requirements.
According to VAMA’s statistics, only a dozen models in Vietnam have a declared fuel consumption rate lower than 4.83 liters/100 km.
Toyota leads with multiple hybrid models: Corolla Altis (4.76 liters/100 km), Camry HEV (4.2 liters/100 km), Yaris Cross HEV (3.8 liters/100 km), and Innova Cross HEV (4.35 liters/100 km).
Honda offers the HR-V e:HEV RS (4.44 liters/100 km) and Civic e:HEV RS (4.56 liters/100 km). The CR-V hybrid has a fuel consumption of 4.45 liters/100 km under basic urban conditions, but this increases to 4.95 liters/100 km when driven in a mixed cycle and 5.24 liters/100 km in urban secondary roads.
In the premium segment, the BMW XM 50e has an average consumption of 1.3 liters/100 km. Volvo features the XC60 and XC90 hybrids, both with consumption rates of less than 2 liters/100 km. Land Rover’s Range Rover Velar has a consumption of 1.9 liters/100 km, while the Porsche Cayenne hybrid consumes around 2 liters/100 km.
