Vietnam’s leading steelmaker, Hoa Phat Group, chaired by billionaire Tran Dinh Long, has announced that the second blast furnace of its Hoa Phat Dung Quat 2 steel complex project has produced its first batch of pig iron, marking the completion of the project’s second phase.
With a sprawling 280-hectare campus, the Hoa Phat Dung Quat 2 steel complex boasts a total investment of VND 85,000 billion (approximately USD 3.6 billion) and is designed to produce 5.6 million tons of high-quality hot-rolled coil (HRC) steel annually. Construction of the complex commenced in Q1 2022.

Hoa Phat Group inaugurates its second blast furnace
The second blast furnace, designed, manufactured, and supplied by Danieli Corus (Netherlands), features a volume of 2500m3 and doubles the pig iron output compared to the Dung Quat 1 furnace. This advanced furnace also boasts lower energy consumption and environmental impact, with emissions and energy usage already surpassing future standards.
Hoa Phat Dung Quat 2 steel complex utilizes cutting-edge technology from European and G7 partners, including a basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and a RH vacuum refining furnace from SMS (Germany), a Primetals steel slab caster (UK), and a blast furnace (BF) from Danieli Corus (Netherlands). This state-of-the-art equipment ensures the highest product quality, optimal production processes, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness.
Hoa Phat Group has invested in modern technology, adopting a closed-loop recycling model, fully recovering waste heat and utilizing excess coal gas from pig iron and steelmaking processes as fuel for boilers to generate electricity. This not only enhances production efficiency and product quality but also reduces operating costs and environmental footprint.
In addition to standard HRC products, the Dung Quat 2 project specializes in high-end HRC grades, catering to the needs of various industries, including manufacturing, automotive, food processing, petrochemicals, and household goods.

A bird’s-eye view of the Hoa Phat Dung Quat steel complex
Spanning a total area of 700 hectares, the Hoa Phat Dung Quat steel complex entails a total investment of over USD 7 billion. The Dung Quat 1 facility, operational since 2021, has an annual capacity of 6 million tons, comprising 3 million tons of HRC and 3 million tons of high-quality construction steel and coil products.
With the completion of the second blast furnace at Dung Quat 2, the Hoa Phat Dung Quat complex now operates a total of six blast furnaces, including four from Dung Quat 1 and two from Dung Quat 2. The complex’s total capacity stands at 12 million tons per year, including high-quality steel and 9 million tons of hot-rolled coil (HRC).
Hoa Phat Group is currently Vietnam’s sole producer of HRC steel, meeting 100% of the domestic demand for this product. This achievement has empowered Vietnam’s mechanical engineering industry to become self-sufficient in raw materials and solidified Hoa Phat’s position as the country’s premier HRC steel manufacturer.
Upon the completion of the Hoa Phat Dung Quat 2 project, Hoa Phat Group’s total steel production capacity will reach 16 million tons per year, ranking among the top 30 steelmakers globally.
