The proposal, established by the Hanoi Institute of Planning and Architecture in 2025 and appraised by the Department of Planning and Architecture, outlines a comprehensive plan.
The main route commences at the intersection of Van Cao and Hoang Hoa Tham streets, concluding at the Thach Binh Station (Hoa Lac) with an approximate length of 39.6 km. Additionally, there are two branches: one leading to Depot 1 (Son Dong, Duong Hoa) and another to Depot 2 (Hoa Lac), totaling 4.8 km in length.

The entire line encompasses 20 stations, comprising 6 underground, 3 elevated, and 11 at-grade stations, predominantly situated along the Thang Long Boulevard and the Hoa Lac – Hoa Binh Expressway. Many of these stations will offer direct connections to other metro lines, including lines 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and the Monorail M2, forming an interconnected network.
The line’s design incorporates a hybrid structure: an underground section from Van Cao to Lieu Giai, continuing along Nguyen Chi Thanh and Tran Duy Hung streets; while the elevated and at-grade sections commence after the National Convention Center and extend to Hoa Lac.
The project includes two primary depots:
Depot 1 (32 hectares): Serves lines 5 and 8, featuring a vehicle assembly workshop. Depot 2 (10.4 hectares): Located within the Hoa Lac urban planning area.
The Hanoi People’s Committee has entrusted the Department of Planning and Architecture with inspecting and confirming the drawings, while the Hanoi Metropolitan Railway Management Board is responsible for announcing the planning and setting up boundary markers. The People’s Committees of the respective wards and communes are tasked with land and boundary management in accordance with the approved plan.
