In a recent interview with the Government Portal on the occasion of the 80th National Day, the UNDP Representative expressed her impression of Vietnam’s development journey, especially since the Renovation period, during which millions were lifted out of poverty, poverty rates significantly decreased, and the economy maintained a stable growth rate of over 6%.

Vietnam is increasingly asserting its leading role

According to Ms. Khalidi, Vietnam’s open-door policy and export-oriented economic model have not only driven economic development but also expanded the country’s relations with external partners.

Vietnam’s Human Development Index has increased by 50% since the Renovation period, clearly reflecting the country’s people-centered orientation. In the future, Vietnam will continue to implement ambitious and determined reforms, and UNDP will always accompany the country on its journey towards green, sustainable, and inclusive growth.

Regarding Vietnam’s role and position in the region and the world, the UNDP Representative believes that Vietnam is increasingly asserting its leading role in multilateral forums, from the regional to the international level.

Vietnam has clearly demonstrated its prioritization of multilateralism through its active participation in the United Nations, the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, involvement in various committees, including the Human Rights Council, the signing and fulfillment of international agreements such as the Paris Agreement, and the contribution of forces, including female soldiers, to peacekeeping activities.

Within the ASEAN region, Vietnam plays a leading role and makes significant contributions to affirming the centrality of multilateralism in the region.

Regarding UNDP’s support for Vietnam in the coming period, Ms. Khalidi shared that the overall direction will be based on Vietnam’s own development vision, focusing on three key areas.

First is green and sustainable development, including support for energy transition, climate change adaptation, the application of nature-based solutions, biodiversity conservation, and the promotion of a circular economy.

Second is private sector development, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, to facilitate their integration into global markets and participation in stable supply chains.

Third is improving governance, with a focus on promoting local governance, connecting people’s aspirations with public services, improving access to justice, supporting Vietnam in human rights mechanisms, and enhancing social inclusion, particularly for people with disabilities, the LGBT community, and women in political life.

‘I feel almost Vietnamese’

In her message to the Vietnamese people, the UNDP Representative shared that the Democratic Republic of Vietnam was born around the same time as the United Nations. Both share common values of dignity, solidarity, equality, and human rights.

Ms. Khalidi congratulated Vietnam on its 80th National Day and expressed her wish for the Vietnamese people to always be healthy, happy, and successful. She also affirmed her joy in accompanying the people in these grand celebrations.

“I feel almost Vietnamese. I can sense the outpouring of patriotism on every street, and I am filled with pride and happiness to see our staff and the people all dressed up, showcasing their colors, and joining together to experience the wonderful journey of their country. I feel truly honored and fortunate to be working in a country like Vietnam,” shared the UNDP Representative.
