“Soaring Power Bills: Not Just Abnormally High, But Identical Too”

Despite the recent cooler weather, many households have experienced a surge in their August electricity bills, with some even higher than the peak summer months. The unusual spike has raised eyebrows, with some questioning the transparency of the billing process, especially in light of identical bills issued for two separate months.

Abnormal Bills?

In recent days, August’s electricity bills have sparked heated discussions on social media. Hundreds of frustrated comments are posted daily, expressing dismay over the soaring electricity charges.

Many customers suggest that the electricity industry should provide transparent and easily accessible online tools to help them monitor and manage their electricity consumption. They also call for a review of the tiered pricing structure, arguing that during hot seasons, increased electricity usage is a necessity rather than a luxury.

According to Mr. Do Van M. (from Hai Ba Trung district, Hanoi), August had many cool days, so his family used electricity sparingly, learning from the high bill in July. “We all slept in one room to save air conditioning costs, but this month’s bill is still VND 200,000 higher than last month’s. This is truly puzzling,” said Mr. M.

Notably, Mr. C. from Gemek II Apartment Building in An Khanh, Hanoi, has experienced unusual spikes in his electricity bills for the past two months, exceeding VND 600,000. Despite his absence and limited air conditioner usage in August, his bill remained high.

What stood out was that the readings on the electricity bills for July and August were identical, with no variation in the numbers. “The electricity consumption and charges for both months are the same, amounting to VND 678,860. I believe this is abnormal,” shared Mr. C.

100% of Electricity Meters are Remote-Read

On September 5, the Tu Liem Power Company (under the Hanoi Power Corporation) conducted a periodic inspection of the electricity metering system at the customer’s request. The inspection revealed that the meter was functioning correctly at the time of the check, and all parameters were clearly displayed. There were no issues with misidentification or leakage in the meter or the wiring behind it.

Addressing customer concerns about the high electricity bills in August, the Hanoi Power Corporation (EVNHANOI) attributed it to the record-breaking power consumption and production in the city during that month. Despite a slight improvement in the weather towards the end of the month, the extreme temperatures persisted, leading to frequent use of cooling appliances and, consequently, higher electricity readings and charges. Improper use and management of electrical appliances also contributed to the surge in electricity bills.

EVNHANOI also highlighted that they have installed remote-read electronic meters for all customers in Hanoi, and any interference is impossible. Customers can conveniently monitor their electricity usage, bills, and access related services through the EVNHANOI App anytime, anywhere.
