Electricity bills surge in August, prompting questions about high costs despite frequent rain and power outages

At noon on September 5, 2025, the Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC) posted a warning on their official Facebook page regarding the spread of misinformation about electricity bills on social media.

The warning clearly stated: “Recently, unverified information related to August 2025 electricity bills has been circulating on social media, causing public concern and impacting the reputation of the electricity sector.”

EVNNPC mentioned that on September 4, the Quang Chinh Commune Police in Thanh Hoa province summoned a citizen, C.T.H., for spreading false information on Facebook about electricity bills. Upon investigation, it was found that this household purchased electricity from a unit outside EVN. The individual admitted to the mistake and pledged to not repeat the offense.

Specifically, according to Thanh Hoa Newspaper, on the morning of September 4, 2025, C.T.H. posted on their personal Facebook account about the high electricity bill. This post quickly gained over 4,800 shares across various personal pages and groups with a large number of members. Some pages even distorted and fabricated the content, causing serious damage to the image of the electricity sector.

Following this incident, the leadership of the Thanh Hoa Power Company instructed relevant departments and units to coordinate with local authorities and the police to investigate and identify the person who posted the content.

The investigation revealed that the individual, C.T.H., residing in Ngoc Tra I village, Quang Chinh commune, Thanh Hoa province, was summoned to the commune police headquarters that evening. During the meeting, C.T.H. admitted to posting unverified information, which caused contradictory public opinions and affected the reputation of the organization and related individuals.

It is important to note that the electricity supplier for this household was the Thanh Hoa Electricity Business Management Joint Stock Company, an organization not directly managed by the electricity sector. Subsequently, C.T.H. proactively rectified the information on personal pages/groups that had shared the post and committed to refrain from similar actions in the future.

Prior to this incident, the Northern Power Corporation had issued a warning about the circulation of a “copied” petition related to August 2025 electricity bills. EVNNPC stated that the content of these posts was mostly copied and pasted on personal pages, fan pages, etc., to attract views and increase interaction, without providing specific data or customer information.

“This is a phenomenon that takes advantage of people’s psychology to exaggerate and cause public concern,” EVNNPC asserted, adding that “false and distorted information will be dealt with strictly.”

Given this situation, the Northern Power Corporation advised customers to reach out to their customer service channels for any queries regarding electricity bills. Customers can contact the hotline 19006769 or get in touch with their local power company to have their meters checked, readouts verified, and billing methods explained.
