On September 6, the People’s Court of Da Nang City sentenced Vo Nhi (born 1975, former official of the Da Nang City People’s Committee Office) to 14 years in prison and his wife, Tran Kim Tuyen (born 1982), to three years in prison for “Abuse of trust to appropriate property.”
According to the case file, in 2002, Mr. N.B.T. (former leader of Da Nang City) and his wife, Ms. L.T.Q., purchased five land plots in various projects within the city. As they did not want to register the land under their names, they asked Nhi and his wife to do so on their behalf. All the documents and red books (land use rights certificates) were handed over to Mr. T.’s family for safekeeping after the registration.

Vo Nhi, former official of the Da Nang City People’s Committee Office, and his wife in court
In 2015, Mr. N.B.T. passed away, and the red books were kept by his wife and family.
However, in 2016, when Ms. Q. requested to transfer the land ownership, Nhi suddenly demanded to be compensated with over two land plots as a “reward” for taking care of Mr. T.’s mother.
When this demand was rejected, Nhi and his wife reported the red books as lost and secretly applied for new ones. They then sold two land plots worth a total of VND 15 billion and used the money for their personal expenses.
Not content with this, Nhi attempted to appropriate the remaining three land plots, but his actions were discovered and reported.
During the investigation, authorities determined that the total value of the five land plots appropriated by Nhi amounted to VND 57.4 billion.
At the trial, Nhi denied the charges. Nevertheless, the court found sufficient evidence to convict and sentence him and his wife as mentioned above.
