The Ministry of Industry and Trade has proposed that from January 1, 2026, all blended, mixed, and traded gasoline for gasoline-powered vehicles nationwide will be E10 gasoline (with a 10% ethanol blend ratio). Many people are concerned about the compatibility of older car and motorcycle engines with biofuels.

Regarding this issue, Yamaha Vietnam stated that their models manufactured after 2010 are suitable for E10 fuel, while those produced before that year may not be compatible.

SYM offers both carbureted and fuel-injected vehicle lines. The fuel-injected models are definitely compatible with E10, while the carbureted models may not be.

Older vehicles using E10 fuel may experience engine issues

As for Honda, all their motorcycle models can use E10 fuel. In the case of blends with an ethanol ratio higher than 10%, the fuel injection system and some other components need to be redesigned. Honda’s vehicles with electronic fuel injection systems are all compatible with E10 gasoline. Meanwhile, Toyota asserts that their models produced from 1997 onwards are all suitable for E10 fuel.

According to experts, older motorcycles produced before 1998 that use E10 gasoline may damage the carburetor, rubber, and plastic parts. Older cars, especially those manufactured before 2000, are also not recommended to use E10 gasoline, especially for models requiring high-octane fuel.

The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association confirms that all gasoline-powered vehicles manufactured since 2000 are safe to use with E10 fuel, implying that most modern vehicles produced in the last 10-15 years can use biofuels with an ethanol content not exceeding 10%.
