The Ghost Festival Market: A Hundred Sellers, A Handful of Buyers

The full moon of the seventh lunar month marks the annual Ghost Festival, a time of vibrant shopping activities. Anticipating a boom in consumer demand, many merchants in Ho Chi Minh City have stocked up on an abundance of fruits and offerings. However, their expectations have fallen flat as the market wears a desolate look with sparse customers and overflowing stalls.

The traditional markets of Ho Chi Minh City were bustling early on the morning of September 6th. A wide array of goods were on offer to cater to the Mid-Autumn Festival market, including joss paper, fruits, and flowers, in large quantities to meet the demands of the local population.

At Cho Thiec, the hub of joss paper sales, various products were hung in front of stalls, with prices ranging from several tens of thousands to millions of VND per set.

However, the number of customers purchasing joss paper was not as high as in previous years. “There are fewer and fewer customers. It could be that people are limiting the burning of joss paper and thus buying less. This year has been very quiet since the beginning of the seventh month,” shared a Cho Thiec merchant.

Similarly, at Cho Ba Chieu, while merchants displayed abundant goods, there were only a few customers.

The prices of fruits for the Mid-Autumn Festival increased slightly by 10-15%. Traders attributed this to the fact that the products were of the highest quality, freshly harvested from gardens, rather than old or frozen produce.

Prices included: green-skinned pomelos with pink flesh at 45,000 VND/kg, sugar pears at 50,000 VND/kg, sugar tangerines at 55,000 VND/kg, and red pomegranates at 100,000 VND/kg.

Customers prioritized fruits with green stems and leaves or eye-catching red and yellow colors for the festival. Despite the price increase, the selected fruits were of the highest quality.

Flower prices remained stable, starting at 30,000 VND per bouquet.

While the market was filled with flowers and fruits, there were only a few customers on the day of the festival.

Despite the low prices, not many people bought flowers for worship. “I’ve prepared a large number of fresh flowers, as in previous years, demand has increased during this period. But this year it’s unexpectedly quiet. If I don’t sell all the flowers, I’ll likely incur a significant loss,” expressed Ms. Tam, a flower trader in Gia Dinh Ward.
