In recent years, Thai Nguyen province has hosted large-scale national and regional sporting events, but the existing sports infrastructure has struggled to meet the demands of these events. The Thai Nguyen Stadium, built several decades ago, has fallen into disrepair.
Recognizing the importance of sports and physical education, construction of a new and modern Thai Nguyen Stadium commenced in December 2022, located in the former Phu Cu district of Thai Nguyen city.
With a total investment of 535 billion VND, the new stadium is funded by central government support, land use fees, and other legal sources of capital.
Spanning across 15 hectares, the stadium is designed to accommodate 22,000 spectators with a modern roof, meeting international standards for football pitches. Upon completion, it will be the largest stadium in the Northern Midland and Mountainous region of Vietnam.
The new Thai Nguyen Stadium will have a similar capacity to Hang Day Stadium (22,500 seats), surpassing Viet Tri Stadium by 2,000 seats (20,000 capacity), and doubling the capacity of Dien Bien Province Stadium (approximately 10,000 seats).

One notable feature of the Thai Nguyen Stadium is its turf. It uses Zeon Zoysia grass, a variety certified by ITGAP and commonly found in international-standard stadiums.
The entire grass pitch is equipped with an advanced automatic irrigation system and receives regular care and maintenance, including frequent mowing to ensure optimal playing conditions.
In addition to football matches, the stadium also features an 8-lane running track and a 10-lane straight track for athletics and other sports events.
After more than two years of construction, the contractors are now in the final stages of completing the remaining items before handing over this project for use.

The construction of the new Thai Nguyen Stadium is a key project for the province. Its completion will not only boost the province’s sports sector but also promote tourism, services, and urban development in Thai Nguyen.
Along with the new stadium, Thai Nguyen province is also set to complete several other key projects in 2025, including the V Belt Road passing through Thai Nguyen province, the Bac Kan – Ba Be Lake – Na Hang (Tuyen Quang) road, and the Headquarters of the Provincial Agencies Block.
