“Vietnamese Auto Giants: Rising from the Ashes”

The Vietnamese automotive industry is witnessing a remarkable transformation, breaking free from its past "curse" of only being able to produce simple components or not being able to manufacture even a humble screw.

For far too long, in the world of industrial “martial arts,” Vietnam’s industry has been burdened by a cruel curse. This curse goes by the name of “Screw.”

The origin of this curse lies in a legendary tale where a foreign FDI “grandmaster” shook their head in dismay, proclaiming that even a simple screw could not be supplied by Vietnamese “martial arts schools.” Thus, whenever a foreign company set up a factory, they had to bring their own “swords, spears, and secret manuals,” leaving our protagonist with the lowest value-added task: assembly.

But today’s story is different. Vietnam’s industry has embarked on a large-scale “exorcism” to prove its strength and break free from the past.

To lift this curse, a powerful leader had to step forward. And step forward they did, in the form of “masters” like VinFast, Thaco, TC Group, and Kim Long Motor. They not only sought knowledge abroad but also determined to establish their own “schools” right here at home. They realized that breaking the curse required more than just one person; it needed an entire ecosystem, a “righteous alliance.”

They began recruiting and training “disciples” – small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) of Vietnam.

Under the guidance of these “masters,” the “disciples” (Vietnamese SMEs) underwent a spectacular transformation. Empowered by new thinking and knowledge, they strived to enhance their capabilities to international standards.

They moved beyond simple tasks. For instance, An Thinh Company, initially producing electrical wires and devices like sockets and plugs, has now mastered the art of manufacturing complex wires and jacks.

Vnines Innovation, established only in 2020, specializes in manufacturing electric motors, controllers, dashboards, and electronic modules for electric cars and motorcycles.

Numerous Vietnamese businesses have attained the international IATF 16949 certification. This is essentially a high-level “passport,” proving that your “martial arts” skills are on par with the best in the world.

Vietnam now boasts the second-highest number of businesses with this “certification” in Southeast Asia.

Specifically, as of May 20, 2025, 858 Vietnamese businesses and manufacturing facilities hold the IATF 16949 certification, ranking just behind Thailand with 1,947 and Malaysia with 639 certified facilities to international standards.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, as of April 2025, over 360 Vietnamese companies directly participate in the automotive supply chain. But when including indirect suppliers, this number expands to approximately 5,000. Of these, 70% supply domestic manufacturers, 8% supply foreign brands, and 17% supply both.

So, has the curse been lifted?

Essentially, yes! Vietnam’s industry can now proudly point to more complex components in a vehicle and say, “That electric motor, that electronic display, they were made by my ‘disciples’!”

The dream of a “Divine Soldier” – a 100% “Made in Vietnam” automobile – still lies ahead and requires further efforts. But for now, we can take pride in knowing that we are no longer mere “foot soldiers” tightening screws; we have become renowned masters in the global industrial “martial arts” arena.
